New Multiple Sclerosis Gene Found Whitmore Mansion. Medicine ...

In each of the three new studies, the scientists compared the genes of people with and without multiple sclerosis, and checked their findings by studying the people even more. The IL7R gene is different in the three studies. Another gene, called IL2RA is also observed in the study published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

?Obviously, the more we know about a disease, the more questions we must ask ourselves,? said Pericak-Vance. ?But it is good that we can ask more questions.?

Scientists have worked for decades to find gene variants associated with multiple sclerosis, and it proved to be a complex challenge, Pericak-Vance notes.

Three new studies show that the gene IL7R, which affects the immune system, can affect a person?s chances of developing MS.

?There are many people who carry the variation that is associated with multiple sclerosis, but not receive in September So now we have to see what other things are involved,? said Pericak-Vance. More work to do

?It ?been more than 20 years, and although we know that genes are important, we were not able to find them. And now, after so many years, we finally hit one,? he said. New Gene study multiple sclerosis

?You know how some puzzles have 500 [and coins] have a few thousand pieces? Well, when we started, we thought, ?OK, is a puzzle of 500 pieces. But, as we have done research increased over the decades, we have realized, ?Oh my God, we have a 1000 piece puzzle we?re trying to put together ?,? Pericak-Vance said.

Peltonen worked in Finland, the National Institute of Public Health and the University of Helsinki, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Pericak-Vance worked on two of the three new studies on the genetics of multiple sclerosis.

The New England Journal of Medicine, columnist Peltonen, MD, Ph.D., writes that scientists still need to find the full range of ?suspicious genes? that are involved in the September Peltonen points out that genes IL2RA and IL7R only a small %age of genetic risk of MS.

Other genes, multiple sclerosis may await discovery, Pericak-Vance notes.

?Either this gene ? the IL7R ? or a gene linked to it can be an excellent target that drug companies can use to develop treatments and cures,? said Pericak-Vance, director of the Institute of Genomics Man of Miami University of Miami. The genes for multiple sclerosis

.The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has received a $ 100,000 Grand Challenges Explorations grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

However, the results are ?very important?, Pericak-Vance tells WebMD.

?I think it was a long time to come and really opens up new possibilities for further research.?
