Results for 1-year outcomes showed a large treatment effect in terms of symptom relief and improved quality of life

21 May 2013, Paris, France: One-year results from SOURCE XT one of the largest, post-approval transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) registries to-date reported today at EuroPCR 2013 show good clinical outcomes in routine clinical practice, with high rates of device success for all access approaches, valve sizes and delivery systems.

The SOURCE XT Post-Approval Study followed up 2688 consecutively enrolled patients (mean age 81.5 years) undergoing TAVI with the Sapien XT heart valve at 93 centres in 17 countries between July 2010 and October 2011. Access was transfemoral, transapical, transaortic or transsubclavian. Events were adjudicated by an independent clinical event committee.

"Results for one-year outcomes showed a large treatment effect in terms of symptom relief and improved quality of life," reported Stephan Windecker, Professor and Chief of Cardiology, Swiss Cardiovascular Center and Clinical Trials Unit Bern, Bern University Hospital, Switzerland. Patients showed sustained improvement in effective orifice area, with low rates of moderate or severe aortic regurgitation.

"One-year mortality and stroke rates were low in this elderly population," Windecker said. The all-cause mortality rate was 19.5% and the stroke rate 6.3% overall. But he noted that one-year survival associated with all-cause mortality was higher in women (90.6%) than in men (87.6%; p=0.0075) and survival associated with cardiac mortality was also higher.

Windecker concluded, "SOURCE XT showed high rates of device success for all access approaches, valve sizes and delivery systems."

Vermont passes law allowing doctor-assisted suicide

By Jason McLure

(Reuters) - Vermont on Monday became the fourth U.S. state to end legal penalties for doctors who prescribe medication to terminally ill patients seeking to end their own lives.

The law, which includes a number of safeguards over the next three years as the state adapts, marked the first time a U.S. state has used the legislative process to make assisted suicide legal. Oregon and Washington have similar laws passed through ballot measures and a Montana court authorized the practice in 2009.

"Vermonters who face terminal illness and are in excruciating pain at the end of their lives now have control over their destinies. This is the right thing to do," said Governor Peter Shumlin, a Democrat, who signed the law on Monday.

Supporters of the practice are hoping Vermont's law will lend momentum in other states, such as Connecticut and New Jersey, that have considered similar legislation. A bill legalizing the practice failed in Massachusetts last year.

The law allows physicians to prescribe death-inducing medications, which terminally ill patients wishing to commit suicide could then administer to themselves. It limits the prescriptions to residents of the state.

"Vermont's law reflects another normalization of the practice of aid in dying in the practice of medicine," said Kathryn Tucker, director of legal affairs at Compassion and Choices, a group that backed the Vermont law. "Support for patients to be empowered and choose aid and dying is growing. So I think this is an important step in moving that forward."

The Vermont bill is more sweeping than the initiatives passed in Oregon or Washington. As in those two states, it provides a number of safeguards - though the Vermont bill calls for these to expire in 2016.

During the first three years, the law requires ailing patients to make three requests for death-inducing drugs. Both the patient's primary physician and a consulting doctor must agree the patient is suffering from a terminal illness and is capable of making an informed decision to request death-inducing drugs.

After July 1, 2016, the practice of prescribing life-ending medication will be overseen by professional practice standards that govern physician conduct in other aspects of medicine.

The two-tiered approach was instituted as a compromise between legislators who preferred Oregon's model of legal safeguards and others who objected to what they saw as government interference in end-of-life decisions.

Advocates of assisted suicide say the practice can save years of suffering for patients of painful terminal illnesses, such as bone cancer. Opponents warn that measures allowing it may encourage people to take their own lives at the behest of potential heirs or because they fear they are imposing a burden on family.

True Dignity Vermont, a group that opposed the Vermont law, said it would work with a network of health care providers to help support alternatives to the terminally ill.

"We now have state-sanctioned suicide in Vermont," said Edward Mahoney, president of the group, in a statement. "If the state won't protect Vermonters, we will try."

Six new books capture the best grilling recipes and techniques ...

Barbecue may be ancient and primal, but the birth of the grill is all about American ingenuity.

The country?s first book on grilling was ?Sunset?s Barbecue Book,? published in 1938, according to Bill and Cheryl Jamison, authors of ?100 Grilling Recipes You Can?t Live Without? (Harvard Common Press).

The book ?dealt with food and cooking only as a secondary interest,? they write. ?Most of the slender volume concerned how to build your own outdoor fire place, using brick, rock and mortar.?

The growing popularity of outdoor cooking continued to grow until grills dotted suburban lawns across America. The fuel of choice: charcoal briquettes, a by-product of Henry Ford?s Model T assembly line. And American consumers ultimately sealed the deal by choosing the Weber kettle introduced in 1951, an iconic model that continues to dominate the industry.

Cooking with fire may be in our DNA, but as our palates evolve, so does grilling, moving increasingly from local and regional to global and seasonal. Whether your style is fast and furious grilling or low and slow barbecue, 2013?s top crop of guide books includes clever tips and mouthwatering recipes from serious competitive cookers, gourmet-driven and trend-setting staffs of food magazines, and professional chefs with a bent for fine dining.

?Champion BBQ Secrets for Real Smoked Foods?

If you tend to think all champion barbecuers play it close to the vest, then, sadly, you never knew Karen Putman.

Before the ERA of barbecue made women equal in the eyes of the flame, Putman mentored the original all-female ?Que Queens. The team was known for its tiaras and beauty queen waves. The catalyst for their girly name and grilling getups? A seriously deluded radio deejay who claimed women weren?t as good at the art of turning out slow-smoked meats as the menfolk.

With those fighting words, Putman steered a team of top Kansas City barbecue women, including Carolyn Wells (Kansas City Barbeque Society), Judith Fertig (national award-winning cookbook author), Karen Adler (cookbook publisher) and Lou Jane Temple (restaurant icon and food personality) through what was billed as an all-out battle of the sexes.

You could call it a draw: the men won once and the women won once, but Putman remained a fixture on the competitive barbecue circuit with her own cooking team, Flower of the Flames, and a barbecue sauce company of the same name. She won national and international championships, all the while mentoring others, including chef Russ Muehlberger of Jon Russell?s BBQ, a smokehouse in Leawood that pays tribute to Putman with several menu items. The ribs are very good but don?t miss variations on her pioneering sweet-heat barbecue sauces.

Putman died in 2011 from complications of breast cancer, but ?Championship BBQ? is a lovely tribute to her huge talent. The second edition offers 300 recipes for such lip smackers as her grand champion rack of lamb, cold-smoked vegetables and salmon with white wine and pesto.

Grand Champion Rack of Lamb

Makes 8 servings

1 cup olive oil

1/4 cup each packed fresh thyme, basil and mint leaves

3 tablespoons seasoned salt

2 tablespoons fresh rosemary needles

2 tablespoons minced garlic

1 tablespoon minced shallots

4 racks of lamb, fat removed and bones frenched (with a sharp knife scrape bits of fat and flesh off the ends)

1/2 cup prepared mustard

1/4 cup amber liquid honey

Prepare the paste: In a food processor, combine oil, thyme, basil, mint, seasoned salt, rosemary, garlic and shallots for 1 minute, or until the mixture becomes a loose paste.

Place lamb in a large sealable plastic bag and pour in paste. Seal bag, toss to coat and refrigerate for 2 hours.

Remove lamb from past and pat dry. Discard paste.

In a small bowl, combine mustard and honey; brush onto lamb. Set aside.

Prepare a fire in your smoker.

Place lamb directly on the smoker rack, add wood to coals and close the lid. Smoke at 225 degrees for about 1 1/2 hours, or until a meat thermometer inserted in the center of a rack reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees for medium-rare, or desired doneness.

?America?s Best BBQ Homestyle: What the Champions Cook in Their Own Backyards?

Kansas City authors/barbecue experts Ardie Davis and Paul Kirk continue to churn out some of the most authentic barbecue books on the market. Last summer they delved into ribs. This summer it?s backyard barbecue, as cooked up by the experts who ride the circuit.

Davis and Kirk asked competitive barbecuers to share recipes for what they make when they?re not trying to win points or prize money. When they?re kicking back with friends and family, the recipes tend to be far more relaxed and, in some ways, more interesting. ?Contest rules and regulations literally put barbecue creativity in a box ? a turn-in box,? Davis writes.

When I took the course for KCBS judge certification, I recall they tried to stump us by slipping in a feathery carrot top, an edible but illegal garnish. Of course, green lettuce, flat-leaf parsley and cilantro are the only acceptable ?vegetation.? None of that red-tipped lettuce or curly leafed kale. Sauce on the ribs? Better be distributed over all the ribs equally, not pooled in the container, or you run the risk of disqualification.

Freed from the constraints of competition designed to allow judges to compare apples to apples, ?Homestyle? goes pretty far afield, featuring recipes for grilled, smoked and barbecued foods with a slightly more gourmet twist. Consider Jeff Brinker?s Easy Wagyu Chili, Bill Minahan?s Chicken and Prosciutto Fatties, Dizzy Pig?s Tsunami Duck Breast, KCass?s Ahi Tuna With Mango Salsa or Bob Lyon?s Grand Gaucho Paella.

The book has a high school yearbook quality, with plenty of snapshots of the folks and their food. The flames-shooting-from-the-grill disaster stories are a sort of blooper bonus. Yes, everyone can get a little carried away when those creative juices start flowing.

Bill Gillespie?s Shrimp Tacos

Make 8 tacos

Slaw:

1/2 cup sour cream

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

Grated zest and juice of 1 lime

1 (16-ounce) package coleslaw mix

2 scallions, white and green parts, diced

1 jalapeno, seeded and diced

2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 large tomato, seeded and diced

Shrimp:

About 24 (1-pound) uncooked shrimp, peeled and deveined

1/2 cup canola oil

1/4-1/2 cup of your favorite seafood seasoning

1-1 1/2 cups Thai sweet chili sauce, for serving

8 (6-inch) corn tortillas

For the slaw: In a large bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, half of the lime zest and all of the lime juice. Add the coleslaw mix, scallions, jalapeno and cilantro and mix well. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in the tomato. Refrigerate for 2 hours or up to 24 hours.

For the shrimp: Prepare a hot grill for direct cooking.

In a large bowl, toss the shrimp in the canola oil, the remaining lime zest and some salt and pepper and let sit for about 30 minutes. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water while the shrimp marinate.

Thread the shrimp on skewers, then season with you favorite rub. Grill directly over the coals for 2 to 3 minutes per side. Remove the shrimp from the grill and from the skewers and toss them in the sweet chili sauce.

Place the tortillas on the grill grate to heat for 1 minute per side.

To assemble the tacos, spoon some slaw into the bottom of each tortilla, top with 3 shrimp and enjoy.

?All Fired Up?

This is a lick-the-pages, straight-from-the-test-kitchen sort of barbecue book that, despite its slickness nevertheless manages to deliver iron-clad recipes and techniques with a certain homespun charm. In fact, the photography is so lush that I absentmindedly found myself trying to wipe flecks and splatters of sweet Kansas City-style sauce off the page.

Curated by Troy Black, a competitive barbecuer, the book mostly concentrates on archetypal recipes from the South, however Black does make a pit stop at the original Oklahoma Joe?s in Kansas City, Kan. ?This is my favorite barbecue joint in the country!? Black writes before singing the praises of the Z-Man sandwich, smoked beef brisket topped with smoked provolone and two crispy onion rings served on a kaiser roll.

Beyond fantastic food photography, occasional portraits of a barbecue pitmaster or joint interior help set the scene. The addition of how-to photos and ?Troy?s Tips,? tips from Black cover all the bases. Recipes include Rosemary Flank Steak With Fig Salsa, Peach Pulled Pork, Texas Smoked Brisket, Curried Chicken Kabobs, Asian-Grilled Quail, Muffaletta Burgers and Grilled Rosemary Lemonade.

You simply can?t mess up when equipped with a well-organized tome, but you won?t tap into the natural quirkiness of the competitive barbecue scene, either.

Peach-Glazed Pork Chops

Makes 4 servings

1 (18-ounce) jar peach preserves

1/4 cup soy sauce

2 tablespoons fresh grated ginger

2 teaspoons olive oil

4 (8-ounce) bone-in pork loin chops (1 1/2 inches thick)

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground pepper

4 large peaches, halved

Preheat grill to 350 to 400 degrees (medium-high) heat. Bring preserves, soy sauce and ginger to a boil in a small saucepan. Remove from heat; reserve 1/2 cup to baste peaches.

Rub oil over pork chops; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grill pork chops, covered with grill lid, 5 to 7 minutes on each side until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest portion registers 145 degrees, basting often with 1 cup peach preserves mixture.

At the same time, grill peaches, covered with grill lid, 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until tender, basting often with the reserved peach preserves mixture. Let pork chops stand 5 minutes before serving.

?Bon Appetit: The Grilling Book?

Cooking meat over fire is an ancient ritual, but Bon Appetit does its best to turn the backyard grilling season into a thoroughly modern affair.

Flip to the Best-Ever Barbecued Ribs and you?ll learn about an ?oven-cheat? method that claims to make your baby backs or spare ribs ultra-tender without the cook standing over a smoker for 12 hours. And instead of organizing according to a hierarchy of land animals, Bon Appetit starts with chicken, ?an all-purpose protein that adapts easily to countless cuisines and skill levels.??

Chapters highlight grilled burgers (fairly common for this genre) and hotdogs (not often given the nod) and the more gourmet flatbreads and pizzas. Overall, the 350 recipes have a global flair ? ?because if there?s one form of cooking that unites the cultures of the world, it?s grilling.? Recipes include Mediterranean Chicken With Za?atar, Bombay Sliders With Garlic Curry Sauce, Green Shawarma Salmon and Cambodian-Style Ginger-Honey Baby Back Ribs. Skip the Old-Fashioned Potato Salad and try Black Barley Salad With Fennel and Radishes.

Finally, who needs sweet tea when there?s a chapter devoted to festive cocktails such as the Tangerine-Ginger Caipirinha?

Chicken Skewers With Coriander Marinade and Lemon Salsa

Makes 6 servings

8 Meyer lemons

1/2 cup finely chopped cucumber, preferably English hothouse

3 tablespoons thinly sliced scallions, divided

1 serrano chile, finely chopped

Pinch of sugar

Kosher salt

1 1/2 pound skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces

Freshly ground black pepper

1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

1/4 cup plain whole-milk yogurt

1 tablespoon vegetable oil, plus more for brushing

2 garlic cloves, coarsely chopped

1 teaspoon cracked coriander seeds

1 teaspoon turmeric (optional)

Using a sharp knife, cut all the peel and white pith from lemons; discard. Cut between membranes to release lemon segments into a medium bowl; squeeze juice from membranes into bowl and discard membranes. Strain juice into a clean bowl; reserve lemon segments and juices separately.

Mix segements, 1 tablespoon lemon juice (set aside remaining juice for another use), cucumber, 2 tablespoons scallions and chile in a small bowl. Stir in sugar; season salsa to taste with salt and set aside.

Place chicken in a medium bowl and season with salt and pepper. Puree 1/4 cup cilantro, yogurt, 1 tablespoon oil, garlic, coriander and turmeric, if using, in a small food processor or blender until smooth. Pour marinade over chicken; toss to coat. Let marinate at room temperature for 20 minutes. Can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before continuing.

Build a medium fire in a charcoal grill, or heat a gas grill to medium-high. Brush grill grate with oil. Thread 4 pieces of chicken on each skewer. Grill, turning once and watching closely to prevent burning, until browned and an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the meat registers 165 degrees, about 8 minutes. Transfer chicken to plate. Spoon lemon salsa over chicken. Garnish with remaining 2 tablespoons cilantro and 1 tablespoon scallions.

?Where There?s Smoke?

Barton Seaver is a chef, National Geographic fellow, a Harvard lecturer ? and the guy who talks sustainability around the fire.

So it?s probably not surprising that his grilling book, ?Where There?s Smoke,? is less meat-centric than most. ?We tend to think that grilling is for meat and that a cookout is a pagan ritual recalling some masculine ethos of the hunter. Well, what about the gatherer in all of us?? Seaver writes.

In fact, the structure of the book follows the traditions of fine dining more than other standard grilling guides, starting with cocktails and appetizers, then soups and salads before hitting the vegetables with the irresistible flavor of smoke. ?Smoke, to my mind, is an ingredient, as basic as stock or olive oil,? he writes.

There are all kinds of surprising gems in this book, including a chapter on sustainable seafood options, tips for healthier and greener grilling and a discussion of woods and alternative smoke sources. As a chef that is equally at home with backyard grilling and fine dining, Seaver offers wine pairing suggestions, as well as recipes for his ?wine salts? that not only season a dish, but also help ?spark? complementary flavors in the wines.

Grilled Fennel With Anchovy Vinaigrette

Makes 4 servings

Vinaigrette:

Juice of 1 orange

1 tablespoon sherry vinegar

1 (2-ounce) can oil-packed anchovy fillets

3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

2 bulbs fennel, stalks discarded and bulbs thinly sliced

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

Kosher salt

Freshly ground black pepper

Place all the ingredients in a blender, including the oil from the canned anchovies. Puree until smooth. Keep the vinaigrette in the refrigerator, tightly covered, until needed or for up to 5 days.

Toss the sliced fennel with the olive oil and season to taste with salt and 2 or 3 cracks of pepper. Let sit for a few minutes to allow the salt to soften the fennel.

Place the fennel in a grill basket and set it on the grill directly over the coals of a medium fire. Placing a few dried fennel stalks on the fire adds a wonderful personality to this dish. Wood chips can overpower the floral taste of the fennel, so if you are using wood, use it sparingly and choose chips or sawdust of delicately flavored woods such as orange, apricot or alder.

Cook for 5 to 7 minutes without moving the basket so that the fennel on the bottom lightly chars. Remove from the grill and toss to combine. The heat of the fennel on the bottom will help soften the fennel on top, giving you a range of textures. Toss the fennel with the vinaigrette and serve immediately.

?100 Recipes You Can?t Live Without: A Lifelong Companion?

Their record speaks for itself: Cheryl and Bill Jamison have co-authored six previous books on grilling and barbecue, including ?Smoke & Spice? and ?Born to Grill,? which have sold more than 1.5 million copies and garnered four James Beard Cookbook Awards.

Based in Santa Fe, this collection of original recipes offers a supplement to the traditional steaks, chops, ribs and burgers, plus chicken, fish and shellfish with a generous sprinkling of some of their favorite Southwestern flavors, including fajitas, tacos, cumin-rubbed carne asada and flame-licked chile rellenos.

But why 100 recipes? That?s roughly the number the avid grilling fan cooks in a year, the authors say. Consider it your bucket list.

There isn?t any food porn to tempt you to make these recipes, but rest assured the recipes and techniques are concise yet thorough without extraneous scene-setting chatter. But do take time to read the snapshots of patio pop culture, with blurbs such as Esquire magazine?s early treatise on why men man the grill, the birth of the grilling industry marked by the publication of the first grilling cookbook and the resurgence of the rotisserie.

Flame-Kissed Chile Rellenos

Makes 4 servings

Cheese filling:

8 ounces Chihuahua or Muenster cheese, grated

6 ounces creamy fresh goat cheese or cream cheese, or a combination, softened

1/2 cup fresh or (thawed) frozen corn kernels

1/4 cup pine nuts, toasted in a dry skillet over medium heat until golden

2 tablespoons minced onion

Cilantro Sauce:

3/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

1/2 to 1 jalapeno or serrano chile

3/4 cup Mexican crema (or substitute creme fraiche or sour cream)

1/8 teaspoon kosher salt or coarse sea salt

8 meaty medium-size poblano chiles or other fresh, fat mild green chiles such as New Mexican or Anaheim

Vegetable oil spray

Chopped tomato (optional)

Mix together the filling ingredients in a meidum-size bowl. Cover and chill until needed. (The filling can be made up to 1 day in advance.)

For the cilantro sauce: Combine the cilantro and jalapeno in a food processor and process until very finely minced. Spoon in the crema and salt and process again until well blended. Cover and refrigerate until needed. (The sauce can be made up to 2 hours ahead, but the cilantro?s sparkle and vibrancy will begin to fade after that point.)

Fire up the grill, bring the temperature to medium (4 to 5 seconds with the hand test).

Grill the chiles, uncovered, for 8 to 10 minutes, turning occasionally so that the skin blackens and blisters all over. Place the chiles in a plastic bag to steam as they cool.

When the chiles are cool enough to handle, peel them, wearing rubber gloves. Slit each chile from end to end on one side only and remove any loose seeds. Don?t remove the seed pod or it will weaken the walls of the chile. (The chiles can be prepared to this point 1 day ahead, covered and refrigerated. Bring them back to room temperature before proceeding.)

Stuff (but don?t overstuff) the cheese mixture into the chiles, bringing the slit edges of each chile back together tightly. If you can?t get the edges to stick back together, remove some of the cheese. Spritz the chiles with oil. Return the chiles to the grill, slit side down. Grill, uncovered, for about 2 minutes, then carefully roll the chiles over onto their opposite sides and grill for 3 to 5 minutes more. When ready, the chiles will have a few charred marks and the cheese will be heated through and gooey.

Serve the chiles hot, with a drizzle of the sauce.

Bomb attacks kill more than 70 Shi'ites across Iraq

By Kareem Raheem

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - More than 70 people were killed in a series of car bombings and suicide attacks targeting Shi'ite Muslims across Iraq on Monday, police and medics said, extending the worst sectarian violence since U.S. troops withdrew in December 2011.

The attacks increased the number killed in sectarian clashes in the past week to more than 200. Tensions between Shi'ites, who now lead Iraq, and minority Sunni Muslims have reached a point where some fear a return to all-out civil conflict.

No group claimed responsibility for the bombings. Iraq has a number of Sunni Islamist insurgent groups, including the al Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq, which has targeted Shi'ites in a bid to kindle a wider sectarian conflagration.

Nine people were killed in one of two car bombings in Basra, a predominantly Shi'ite city 420 km (260 miles) southeast of Baghdad, police and medics said. "I was on duty when a powerful blast shook the ground," said a police officer near the site of that attack in the Hayaniya neighborhood.

"The blast hit a group of day laborers gathering near a sandwich kiosk," he said, describing corpses littering the ground. "One of the dead bodies was still grabbing a blood-soaked sandwich in his hand."

Five other people were killed in a second blast inside a bus terminal in Saad Square in Basra, police and medics said.

In Baghdad, at least 30 people were killed by car bombs in Kamaliya, Ilaam, Diyala Bridge, al-Shurta, Shula, Zaafaraniya and Sadr City - all areas with a high concentration of Shi'ites.

A parked car bomb also exploded in the mainly Shi'ite district of Shaab in northern Baghdad, killing 12 people and wounding 26 others, police and hospital sources said.

In Balad, 80 km (50 miles) north of Baghdad, a parked car blew up near a bus carrying Shi'ite pilgrims from Iran, killing five Iranian pilgrims and two Iraqis who were travelling to the Shi'ite holy city of Samarra, police said.

Eleven people were killed by a car bomb and a suicide bomber in Hilla, 100 km (60 miles) south of Baghdad, police and medics said. Both attacks occurred near a Shi'ite place of worship and an outdoor market.

CORPSES FOUND

In the western province of Anbar, the bodies of 14 people kidnapped on Saturday, including six policemen, were found dumped in the desert with bullet wounds to the head and chest, police and security sources said.

When Sunni-Shi'ite bloodshed was at its height in 2006-07, Anbar was in the grip of al Qaeda's Iraqi wing, which has regained strength in recent months.

In 2007, Anbar's Sunni tribes banded together with U.S. troops and helped subdue al Qaeda. Known as the "Sahwa" or Awakening militia, they are now on the government payroll and are often targeted by Sunni militants as punishment for co-operating with the Shi'ite-led government.

Three Sahwa members were killed in a car bomb explosion as they collected their salaries in the city of Samarra, north of Baghdad, police said.

And a suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt detonated himself at a Sahwa checkpoint, killing two fighters and wounded another seven in Baiji, 180 km (112 miles) north of Baghdad.

Iraq's fragile intercommunal fabric is under increasing strain from the conflict in nearby Syria, which has drawn Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims from across the region into a proxy war.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's main regional ally is Shi'ite Iran, while the rebels fighting to overthrow him are supported by Sunni Gulf powers Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Iraq says it takes no sides in the conflict, but leaders in Tehran and Baghdad fear Assad's demise would make way for a hostile Sunni Islamist government in Syria, weakening Shi'ite influence in the Middle East.

The prospect of a shift in the sectarian balance of power has emboldened Iraq's Sunni minority, which is embittered by Shi'ite dominance since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein by U.S.-led forces in 2003.

Thousands of Sunnis began staging street protests last December against Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, whom they accuse of marginalizing their sect.

A raid by the Iraqi army on a protest camp in the town of Hawija last month ignited a spate of violence that left more than 700 people dead in April, according to a U.N. count, the highest monthly toll in almost five years.

At the height of sectarian violence in 2006-07, the monthly death toll sometimes topped 3,000.

(This story has been corrected to show that not all those killed in the attacks were Shi'ites)

Murray Lipp: Public Protests and Pride Parades: The Power of Participation

2013-05-18-doma200.jpgAs we move through life we each leave a legacy, a personal imprint on the world. For me, an increasingly important and meaningful part of my personal story is my engagement in LGBT activism and my participation in LGBT cultural events.

I have attended four LGBT-related public protests in recent months and I am eagerly awaiting the 2013 LGBT pride parade season in New York City. Both types of events -- protests and parades -- are very empowering ways in which to participate in society and help effect societal change.

One of the defining characteristics of the LGBT community is our resilience and refusal to accept oppression. We're also known for our capacity, as a community, to put on a grand party when the situation demands it. Public protests and pride parades, respectively, play a key role in challenging discrimination against LGBT people and celebrating LGBT diversity.

Public Protests (Same-Sex Marriage in New York)

2013-05-18-protest200b.jpgA public protest is a form of direct action whereby a group or community of people comes together, in a public manner, to express opposition or discontent about some type of unsatisfactory or unjust situation. While the aim is to communicate a message to the broader public about a given topic or issue, there is also the hope that this engagement with society will lead to positive social change.

From the historic Stonewall 'uprising' in New York City in 1969, to the HIV/AIDS protests in the 1980s/90s, through to the marriage equality rallies across the USA in 2013, the LGBT community in America has a long and rich history of publicly advocating for societal change. Through protests and collective action, the private and individual experience of discrimination is given a very necessary public stage. When the same 'private troubles' are experienced by a mass of individuals, such problems become 'public issues' requiring group level intervention (see C.Wright Mills and The Sociological Imagination). Discrimination against LGBT people is a prime example.

My foray into LGBT-activism was in 2009 in New York when efforts were being made to legalize same-sex marriage. While I had started an online campaign to promote the legalization of gay marriage in New York, I decided I also needed to participate in direct action events or 'real-world' (organic) activism as I call it. I wanted to connect with others in a more human way -- not just online -- and I wanted to be able to document these experiences for those who couldn't or wouldn't participate.

So I began attending LGBT-related political rallies in New York and started taking photos of what I saw at these events. From Equality & Justice Day 2009 in Albany lobbying state politicians, to marriage equality rallies in Queens and Manhattan, I started to get a sense of how significant and important these events were in exerting influence over broader society. While same-sex marriage was not legalized in 2009, these collective and direct action efforts certainly paved the way for future change.

By the time 2011 arrived, New York had been primed for the legalization of same-sex marriage. Various protests and rallies were held by pro-marriage equality advocates in the months leading up to the successful vote in the New York legislature in June 2011. Looking back on that period it is with a sense of satisfaction that I can say I participated in a number of these. I attended Equality & Justice Day 2011 in Albany, I photographed a rally against an anti-gay politician in Brooklyn, and I participated in two marriage equality rallies in Manhattan (Stonewall Inn rally, Union Square rally).

Public Protests (National Marriage Equality and Other LGBT Issues)

2013-05-18-nem.jpgMy experiences with real-world activism in New York in 2009 were accompanied by a growing desire to participate in societal change at a more national level. Attending the National Equality March 2009 was an inspirational experience in this regard. Marching together with thousands of LGBT people and our allies from all across the country in a united voice against LGBT-related discrimination was empowering and exhilarating.

After participating in New York City's inspiring 'End DOMA' rally in March 2013, I became aware of an intense desire to participate in the Supreme Court rallies that had been planned for later that month to coincide with the Prop 8 and DOMA hearings. I attended the March 27 DOMA rally in Washington DC and it was indeed an amazing experience. I will never forget the joy and exhilaration of being amongst the cheering crowd that greeted Edie Windsor (DOMA complainant) when she emerged from the Supreme Court after the hearing (see my video tribute to Edie Windsor here).

More recently, in recognition of the fact that marriage inequality is not the only issue that negatively impacts LGBT people, I've attended two protests relating to other forms of LGBT discrimination. In early May 2013 a group of LGBT Catholics and allies engaged in a vigil outside St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City in protest of Cardinal Timothy Dolan's suggestion that LGBT people should wash their hands before entering a Catholic Church. As an observer I was on hand to photograph and document this action. This past week, in response to anti-gay violence in New York City, I attended the 'Take Back the Night' rally in Manhattan joining together with other New Yorkers in condemning homophobic abuse.

Participating in public protests and direct action efforts are not for everyone, however. LGBT people who are not 'out' to friends and family are highly unlikely to attend such events due to the potential public exposure. Others cannot break away from commitments and responsibilities such as work and family. There are also those of course who simply have no interest in participating in these types of societal actions. As someone who has the capacity and the desire to participate, I now increasingly feel a personal obligation to do so -- not only to show my personal support for these causes but to photographically document these events for those who cannot or will not attend.

Pride Parades (New York City)

2013-05-18-pride200.jpgIt's not just protesting and rallying, however, that the LGBT community has developed particular skill in. With roots in the 1969 Stonewall movement, LGBT pride parades are now held annually in various cities across America, all aiming to celebrate and honor the diversity and validity of LGBT identities and culture. While protests have as their starting point a need and desire to challenge something unacceptable (e.g. discrimination), parades have as their starting point a wish to celebrate something positive (e.g. human diversity).

Some people question the necessity of LGBT pride parades and reference the fact that there aren't 'straight pride parades.' Indeed, there would be no purpose for the latter because straight people are not an historically oppressed minority group. Straight people, as a group, are not subjected to violence and oppression the world over simply for being 'straight.' We live in a society which to a large extent remains structured around the erroneous assumption that all people are straight. Slowly, that is changing. It's fair to say, however, that in many places around the world each day still seems like one massive 'straight pride parade' in which the lives and culture of LGBT people are seldom featured or reflected.

In this sense LGBT pride parades aim to empower LGBT people by, firstly, acknowledging our very existence and, secondly, by celebrating our diversity and culture. Such parades are not an effort to promote separatism or to communicate any degree of superiority or inferiority. They aim simply to validate and celebrate a group of people who have historically been demonized by broader society.

My own personal experience of participation in LGBT pride parades began in 2011. Despite having lived in New York City for nearly four years by that point, I had not once attended a pride parade. With my growing interest in political activism and photography, however, I hit the pride parade scene in June 2011 and what a blast I had. It started with Queens, then Brooklyn, and then the biggest one of them all, the Manhattan pride parade. A month later, in July 2011, I was present outside the NYC Office of the City Clerk to photograph the first group of same-sex couples issued marriage licenses in NYC, a day which itself became an impromptu 'pride parade' and cultural celebration.

In 2012, hooked from the previous year's participation in pride parades, I repeated the Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan trifecta taking hundreds of photos in the process and sharing them online across the Gay Marriage USA Facebook network.

While right-wing anti-gay conservatives hysterically argue that LGBT pride parades are simply an effort to promote some kind of 'deviant sexual lifestyle,' the truth is something very different. While pride parades feature a collection of characters in outlandish costumes who dress-up intentionally for the occasion, they also feature the participation of regular LGBT folks wearing regular clothes honoring their regular lives. Like any community or group of people, we (LGBT people) are a mixed one that incorporates the mild to the extreme and everything in between.

Participation, Photography, and History

2013-05-18-pride200b.jpgAs direct action efforts advocating for the legalization of same-sex marriage continue across the country, and as the LGBT pride parade season looms on the horizon, I encourage those LGBT people who have never participated in a public rally or a pride parade to seriously consider doing so. There is something particularly powerful and meaningful about participating in these public events that literally do have the potential to change society and to change lives.

I agree that online activism is fueling a rapid change in attitudes about LGBT rights and helping to fast-track the path toward full equality, and I will continue to engage in it via Gay Marriage USA. On the other hand, our daily lives are becoming so heavily impacted by social media and online activities that sometimes it's easy to forget about the 'real world' out there, that one that has streets and people and noises and aromas.

We must continue to recognize the importance of real-world public protests and pride parades in helping to shape society in ways which ultimately benefit us all. In that regard, I will continue to find meaning and satisfaction in attending and photographing these events and playing my small part in helping to effect historic social changes. Helping to create a world which is kinder to LGBT people has become an important part of my life story and my contribution to society.

The Great Gatsby

Director: Baz Luhrmann
Writers: Baz Luhrmann, Craig Pearce
Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire

Director Baz Luhrmann creates extravagant and exceptional cinematic imagery. The first 90 minutes of this?2:23?long movie bristle with electric energy: dazzling mise en scene, dynamic pacing and gorgeous cinematography. Once the dramatic conflict grabs hold, it slams to a stop and starts to feel long. Leonardo DiCaprio gives a subdued, but nuanced performance in the title role. Tobey Maguire (Carraway) is appropriately bland and the ladies are lovely. The soundtrack, a mashup of 20s period, jazz, hip hop and R&B, is outstanding right thru the credits. This is a big, glamorous motion picture. A bit emotionally slight, but impressive to appreciate.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Director: J.J. Abrams
Writers: Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman,
Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana

Watching this movie felt like d?j? vu. The plot (an evil power bent on destroying the Star Fleet) is certainly nothing new. The dialogue seemed cobbled together from every clich? in the series: annihilation is imminent with every decision, each crew member must take a stand (using the inevitable clich?) and Kirk/Spock spar/smooch. The futuristic Earth has cool architecture and the big crash is spectacular, but most of the combat is all noise and flash without much cool action. Fans will dig the endless drama, but I?d rather see ?Iron Man 3? again.

Investigators seek cause of New York commuter train crash

By Greg McCune

(Reuters) - Federal investigators on Saturday searched for the cause of a rush-hour train crash in Connecticut that injured dozens of people commuting home from New York City, three of them critically.

More than 60 people were hospitalized Friday night after an eastbound commuter train derailed and collided with a westbound passenger train near the Connecticut suburb of Fairfield.

Eight people remained hospitalized on Saturday, three in critical condition, Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy said.

The collision of the Metro North trains forced Amtrak to shut down service indefinitely between New York and Boston.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators arrived at the scene on Saturday to determine the cause. There had been construction and repair work going on in the area and one question was whether debris was on the track.

"They can't rule anything out," said Malloy, adding that he wanted investigators to complete their work as quickly as possible so the busy commuter rail line could be reopened.

The eastbound train was headed to New Haven, Connecticut, when it collided with the train bound for New York's Grand Central Station.

Metro North is a commuter railroad serving the northern suburbs of New York City. It is operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, a New York State agency. Fairfield is about 50 miles north of New York City.

The rail line serves a major corridor between Boston and New York and thousands of commuters use it every business day.

Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift big winners at Billboard Awards

(Reuters) - Pop stars Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift won the big prizes on Sunday at the Billboard Music Awards, which also honored legendary performers Madonna and Prince.

Bieber, who was named top male artist, also performed at the show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. He also took home Billboard's first Milestone Award, chosen by fans, for musical innovation and ingenuity.

"I'm 19 years old. I think I'm doing a pretty good job, Bieber said. "It should really be about the music. This is not a gimmick. I'm an artist and I should be taken seriously. And all this other bull should not be spoken of."

The teen heartthrob did not elaborate, but in recent months he has been involved in several high-profile incidents ranging from driving offenses to reports of hard partying and drugs being found on his tour bus in Sweden.

Swift won the top award of the night, artist of the year. She thanked her fans by telling them: "You are the longest and best relationship I've ever had."

Pop diva Madonna was named top touring artist for her "MDNA Tour," 2012's highest-grossing concert series.

Madonna strode onstage to accept the accolade from will.i.am, wearing black fishnet stockings, garters and a padlock choker.

The MDNA tour grossed more than $305 million from 88 sold-out shows and attracted an audience of 2.2 million people. Madonna acknowledged her fans, saying: "A showgirl needs her fans. Thank you for supporting me for three decades."

She also thanked her four children for being "incredibly supportive."

The Billboard Music Awards, hosted by "30 Rock" star Tracy Morgan, opened with Bruno Mars performing "Treasure."

Early awards went to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, who won top rap song for "Thrift Shop," and Nicki Minaj, who took home the top rap artist honor.

Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" was named top digital song, while Swift took home the top Billboard 200 album award for "Red."

French producer and DJ David Guetta was named top electric dance music artist.

Among musical highlights, Bieber performed "Take You," which was chosen by his fans via Twitter, before pairing up with will.i.am for "#ThatPOWER."

Other musical pairings included Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull singing "#LiveItUp," Minaj and Lil Wayne who performed "High School," and Christina Aguilera and Pitbull singing "Feel This Moment."

Selena Gomez, Chris Brown, Icona Pop, South Korea rap sensation Psy and Swift, who was nominated for 11 Billboard awards and received eight, performed as well.

In an apparently unscripted moment, Miguel, performing "Adorn," leapt from the stage and landed feet-first atop two young women. No mention was made on the broadcast as to whether they were injured.

The show ended with the Icon Award for Prince, in recognition of his unique career and accomplishments in the music industry. Prince performed a medley to close the show, but did not deliver an acceptance speech.

Climate change may have little impact on tropical lizards

Friday, May 17, 2013

A new Dartmouth College study finds human-caused climate change may have little impact on many species of tropical lizards, contradicting a host of recent studies that predict their widespread extinction in a rapidly warming planet.

The findings, which appear in the journal Global Change Biology, offer new hope for survival of a creature thought to be doomed

Most predictions that tropical cold-blooded animals, especially forest lizards, will be hard hit by climate change are based on global-scale measurements of environmental temperatures, which miss much of the fine-scale variation in temperature that individual animals experience on the ground, said the article's lead author, Michael Logan, a Ph.D. student in ecology and evolutionary biology.

To address this disconnect, the Dartmouth researchers measured environmental temperatures at extremely high resolution and used those measurements to project the effects of climate change on the running abilities of four populations of lizard from the Bay Islands of Honduras. Field tests on the captured lizards, which were released unharmed, were conducted between 2008 and 2012.

Previous studies have suggested that open-habitat tropical lizard species are likely to invade forest habitat and drive forest species to extinction, but the Dartmouth research suggests that the open-habitat populations will not invade forest habitat and may actually benefit from predicted warming for many decades. Conversely, one of the forest species studied should experience reduced activity time as a result of warming, while two others are unlikely to experience a significant decline in performance.

The overall results suggest that global-scale predictions generated using low-resolution temperature data may overestimate the vulnerability of many tropical lizards to climate change.

"Whereas studies conducted to date have made uniformly bleak predictions for the survival of tropical forest lizards around the globe, our data show that four similar species, occurring in the same geographic region, differ markedly in their vulnerabilities to climate warming," the authors wrote. "Moreover, none appear to be on the brink of extinction. Considering that these populations occur over extremely small geographic ranges, it is possible that many tropical forest lizards, which range over much wider areas, may have even greater opportunity to escape warming."

Re: the Benghazi messages: Browse administration emails like an inbox

The 100 pages of emails that the White House released on Wednesday, which cover the administration's crafting of its talking points about the Sept. 11, 2012, attack in Benghazi, Libya, do not contain any clear indications of a political cover-up.

But they do indicate that the CIA, FBI, State Department and the White House operate with the same sort of office drudgery as workplaces across America. There are the same cascading CC lists, the guy who insists on formally addressing every email message to "Colleagues" and the incessant looping in of one more person as a decision impends.

The following interactive arranges the emails as a typical inbox, in date order. For the sake of simplicity, every email is included in one inbox instead of separate ones for different people. You can click the "From" or "Thread" bars to sort by those fields instead.

Letters in square brackets indicate that a person's name was redacted and replaced by a handwritten acronym representing the organization he or she works for.

Woman describes Berlusconi's 'bunga bunga' parties

MILAN (AP) ? Silvio Berlusconi's private disco featured not only aspiring showgirls performing striptease acts as sexy nuns and nurses, but one woman dressed up as President Barack Obama and a prominent Milan prosecutor whom the billionaire media mogul has accused of persecuting him, according to the first public sworn testimony by the Moroccan woman at the center of the scandal.

Karima el-Mahroug's testimony Friday at the trial of three former Berlusconi aides accused with procuring her and other women for prostitution confirms a sexually charged atmosphere at the "bunga bunga" parties of the then-sitting premier. The trial is separate from the one in which Berlusconi is charged with paying for sex with a minor ? el-Mahroug when she was 17 ? and trying to cover it up.

El-Mahroug, now 20, said she attended about a half-dozen parties, using her nickname Ruby, and that after each, Berlusconi handed her an envelope with up to 3,000 euros ($3,900) in denominations of 500. She said she later received 30,000 euros cash from the then-premier paid through an intermediary ? money that she told Berlusconi she wanted to use to open a beautician salon despite having no formal training.

But she denied that Berlusconi had ever given her 5 million euros ($6.43 million). She said she told acquaintances and even her father that she was going to receive such a large sum "as a boast," but that it was a lie to make her seem more important.

The three Berlusconi aides ? Emilio Fede, an executive in Berlusconi's media empire; Nicole Minetti, a former dental hygienist, showgirl and local politician, and talent agent Dario "Lele" Mora ? are accused of recruiting women for prostitution at the parties and abetting prostitution, including of a minor. They deny the charges.

El-Mahroug has made carefully orchestrated statements to the media since the scandal broke, but has never publicly given sworn testimony. Both she and Berlusconi deny having had sex.

Dressed soberly with her hair pulled back, El-Mahroug said she first made contact with Berlusconi's inner circle when she participated in a beauty contest organized by Fede in Sicily when she was 16.

After that she made her way to Milan, hoping to find work. She said she tried to get work through another defendant's talent agency but didn't have proper identity documents, and wound up landing a job as a hostess in nightclubs, earning around 100 euros ($130) a night.

She frequently changed accommodation during that time, staying for periods of days with people whose names she no longer recalls.

Eventually, she ran into Fede at a restaurant, where she reminded him of his promise in Sicily to help her. Shortly thereafter, she was invited to a dinner party, at Berlusconi's villa outside of Milan.

She testified that she met the premier that night ? on Valentine's Day in 2010 ? and that he gave her an envelope of 2,000 to 3,000 euros ($2,600 to $3,900) as she was leaving, saying it was "a little help" and asking for her telephone number, which she gave him.

At that party, she said, she introduced herself as Ruby and told other guests a fake tale that she was Egyptian, that her mother was a famous Arab singer and that she was related to then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. She was 17 at the time but had passed herself off as being 23 or 24.

El-Mahroug confirmed Friday what other witnesses have testified previously: that at some of the soirees, young female party guests had dressed up like nuns and danced for Berlusconi and then stripped down to their underwear.

The parties took place in a disco in Berlusconi's villa equipped with a lap dance pole. El-Mahroug told the court that there was sometimes a singer who is close to Berlusconi at the parties, but most of the guests were young women. While she went home in a taxi alone the first night, other times, she testified, she slept in a guest room by herself. Since she only had the dress she was wearing, she was given a track suit in the morning to have breakfast, and sometimes stayed for lunch, leaving in the late afternoon.

El-Mahroug said Minetti, one of the defendants, had dressed up like a nun at that Feb. 14 party and lifted her costume to show off her legs as she danced in Berlusconi's in-house disco. El-Mahroug demonstrated from her seat how Minetti had raised her hemline. She said Minetti eventually took off her costume and was in just her lingerie.

She said another young woman dressed up alternately as Obama or a Milan magistrate who is leading the prosecution against Berlusconi in the sex scandal, donning a red wig and the black robes worn by magistrates in Italy.

"The girls who were dressed in costumes approached him in a sensual way as they danced. They raised their skirts," El-Mahroug testified. She added: "I never saw contact."

On the stand, El-Mahroug denied ever having acted as a prostitute, and repeated her denials that she ever had sex with Berlusconi.

However, when the presiding judge pressed her on wiretaps in which she appears to be referring to acts of prostitution, she said that her statements then were just "stupid things." It was the same phrase she used to explain away her statements that she was about to receive 5 million euros from the then-premier.

At one point, the judge admonished her that she was testifying at a trial aimed at ascertaining the facts, not appearing on a televised interview, when she appeared to criticize prosecutors, then backed down.

Prosecutors in Berlusconi's separate trial have said El-Mahroug's testimony is unreliable and are relying on her sworn statements. The defense had initially called her as a witness, but then changed its strategy and didn't call her. That trial is nearing a verdict and will reconvene May 24.

How To Add a Glowing Star To Your Chuck Taylor All-Stars

Converse's Chuck Taylor All-Star sneakers may never go out of style, but just in case you can future-proof them with this fun hack from Adafruit that swaps out the standard star crest with a glowing logo. Presumably, just like Elroy Jetson used to wear.

Unless you work in an electronics laboratory, the hack does require you to buy a few things. Like an electroluminescent panel and an inverter, which are both conveniently sold through the Adafruit website. But that doesn't take away from the fact that this hack is a simple and subtle way to make your kicks stand out, particularly if you like the look of All-Stars, but hate that absolutely everyone wears them.

Afghanistan: Bomb kills 15, including 6 Americans

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A suicide car bombing tore through a U.S. convoy in Kabul on Thursday, killing at least 15 people including six Americans in a blast so powerful it rattled the other side of the Afghan capital. U.S. soldiers rushed to help, some wearing only T-shirts or shorts under their body armor.

A Muslim militant group claimed responsibility for the morning rush hour attack, saying it was carried out by a new suicide unit formed in response to reports that the U.S. plans to keep bases and troops in Afghanistan even after the 2014 deadline for the end of the foreign combat mission.

The group, Hizb-e-Islami, said its fighters had stalked the Americans for a week to learn their routine before striking ? a claim which raises questions about U.S. security procedures.

Two children were among nine Afghan civilians killed in the attack.

"I can't find my children. They're gone. They're gone," their father screamed before collapsing to the ground as neighbors swarmed around to comfort him.

Two American soldiers were killed, as were four American civilian contractors with DynCorp International. DynCorp, a U.S. defense contractor based in Falls Church, Va., said its employees were working with U.S. forces training the Afghan military when the blast occurred.

It was the deadliest attack to rock Kabul in more than two months and followed a series of other assaults on Americans, even as U.S.-led forces are focusing more on training while leaving the fighting militants to their Afghan counterparts.

Thursday's bombing pushed the monthly toll for the U.S.-led coalition to 18, making May the deadliest month so far this year. By comparison, 44 international troops were killed in the same period last year. The overall number of coalition deaths has dropped as Afghan forces increasingly take the lead.

The suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden car at about 8 a.m. and set nearby buildings on fire. The blast left body parts scattered on the street along with the mangled wreckage of one of the U.S. vehicles.

Kabul Deputy Police Chief Daud Amin said it was difficult to count the dead.

"We saw two dead bodies of children on the ground," Amin said. "But the rest of the bodies were scattered around." Thirty-five Afghans were wounded, according to the Health Ministry.

Kabul had been enjoying a relative lull in attacks in recent weeks. The last major assault was March 9, when suicide bombers struck near the Afghan Defense Ministry while U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel was visiting.

President Hamid Karzai condemned Thursday's attack, saying it was the work of "terrorists and enemies of Afghanistan's peace."

A spokesman for the Hizb-e-Islami militant group, Haroon Zarghoon, told The Associated Press that one of its operatives carried out the attack on two vehicles of U.S. advisers.

Zarghoon says the organization has formed a new cell to stage suicide attacks on U.S. and other coalition troops.

"The cell had been monitoring the movement and timing of the American convoy for a week and implemented the plan Thursday morning," Zarghoon said.

He said the cell was established in response to reports that the U.S. plans to keep permanent bases and troops in Afghanistan even after the NATO withdrawal.

The U.S. has said it wants no permanent bases in Afghanistan after 2014, but Afghan President Hamid Karzai raised eyebrows last week when he announced he had agreed to an American request to keep nine bases.

A small American force is expected to remain in the country to assist Afghans in keeping security, but the exact number or mission has not yet been decided.

Hizb-e-Islami is headed by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, a 65-year-old former Afghan prime minister and onetime U.S. ally. The militia has thousands of fighters and followers in the country's north and east.

The U.S. heavily financed Hekmatyar's government during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s. In recent years, Afghan and NATO troops have been trying to hunt him down. In 2010, U.S. bombs targeted his military chief, Kashmir Khan, in Kunar province; Khan was wounded but survived.

However, Hekmatyar's son-in-law has held peace talks with Karzai and American officials. Hizb-e-Islami has a political arm with a significant number of seats in parliament, though it has tried to distance itself from Hekmatyar and violence. Several of Karzai's senior aids in the past have been affiliated with Hekmatyar.

In a further sign of the complexities of the Afghan insurgency, Hizb-e-Islami is also a rival to the Taliban insurgency, even though both movements share the goal of driving out foreign troops and establishing a state that would follow a strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Hekmatyar and the Taliban supreme leader, Mullah Omar, are said to be bitter personal enemies.

Thursday's attack was the second in eight months claimed by Hizb-e-Islami, the last one in September when a female suicide car bomber killed least 12 people in Kabul. At the time, Hizb-e-Islami said the attack was revenge for the film "Innocence of Muslims," which was made by an Egyptian-born American citizen and infuriated Muslims for its negative depiction of the Prophet Muhammad.
