If faces looked familiar at Bloomingdale?s Century City last week, that?s because The Actors Fund held a cocktail reception to kick off its annual fundraiser: the June 10 Tony Awards Viewing Party in Los Angeles, which will honor Jason Alexander with the Julie Harris Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Taking place at the Skirball Center in L.A., the event will offer a big-screen live feed from New York of the Tony Awards telecast, along with an auction, awards presentation and entertainment during the TV broadcast?s commercial breaks.

Scott Bakula of ?Star Trek: Enterprise? and ?Men of a Certain? will host the evening, written and produced by writer/producer David Rambo, of ?V? and ?CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.? Luke Yankee is the night?s director

Among those enjoying champagne and hors d?oeuvres May 23, amid the clothes racks and sales counters on Bloomie?s second floor, were Elliott Gould, George Chakiris of ?West Side Story,? Kate Linder of ?The Young and the Restless,? Joan Van Ark of ?Knots Landing,? Erin Murphy, Ilene Graff, Carole Cook, Tom Troupe, Warren Berlinger, Brenda Dickson, Donna Mills, James Karen, Channing Chase, Judy Norton, Nancy Dussault, Erin Murphy, Rip Taylor, Stan Livingston, Alison Arngrim, Donna Mills, Barbara Van Orden and others.

Taking the microphone, James Karen spoke of the need for The Actors Fund and the time before actors were afforded the superstar status they enjoy today. He reminded that in decades past, apartment buildings posted signs that declared, ?no children, pets or actors.?

Mitzi Gaynor next gave details of the upcoming live Tony Awards telecast and party, also inviting the group to shop at Bloomingdale?s, where 10% of their purchases that day would go to the Fund.

The Tony Awards Viewing Party?s celebrity committee includes Gould, Dussault, Julie Bowen, Dann Florek, Zachary Quinto, Garry Marshall, Susan Sarandon, Holland Taylor and Steve Guttenberg.

The Actors Fund acts as a safety net to all those in the performing arts and entertainment industry in need of social services, emergency assistance, health care, housing and employment services.

Website amasses mementos for grieving military families

Debra Booth had no pictures from the five weeks that her son, Marine Lt. Joshua Booth, served in Iraq before he was killed in action in 2006.

But five years later, on rollofhonor.togetherweserved.com, she saw photos of him taken by other Marines who had served with him in that country. "To see him in his element, to see him in his final days, was amazing," said Booth, of Sturbridge, Mass.

"My hope is on this site that this will keep happening over and over again, that we will keep connecting," she said days after she'd traveled to Bedford, Va., to be at his grave last Sunday, what would have been Lt. Booth's 29th birthday. Among other things, she hopes it helps fill out a "clearer story" of Josh Booth for the two children he left behind but never got to know.

Foster, an American citizen born in Scotland, once provided low-cost telephone calls to military members serving overseas. When Skype came along and ended his phone business, he created TogetherWeServed.com as another way for active-duty military and veterans to connect. About 1.2 million have joined, and there are 1.5 million visits each month, often veterans seeking someone they had served with but lost track of.

The new public roll of honor is "a gift to every family who has lost a loved one in service," he said.

"Memories fade, and the service and sacrifice of these service people will go unrecognized if it is not captured," he said.

Booth posted a letter from a Marine captain who had served with her son, extolled his humility and service, and pleaded with his Sturbridge hometown to produce more men like him.

"Every mother hopes you raise your son with certain qualities," she said. The letter tells the world, she said, that her son "was a good man."

The Coca-Cola 600 is NASCAR?s longest race. At 600 miles, Sunday night?s marathon is closer to an endurance race, designed to test the limits of both car and driver.

The teams have done their part, delivering cars that should withstand the rigors of 600 miles, but what about the drivers? The Coke 600 is unlike anything they experience all season long, especially for first time competitor Danica Patrick.

Patrick endured seven Indianapolis 500s during her tenure in the IndyCar Series but predicts that the 600 will test her like no other race has.

?For me, it?s just a matter of staying focused, staying positive, and staying hydrated,? Patrick said.

While mental health will play a role in determining the outcome of Sunday?s race, the Coca-Cola 600 requires a physical health and hygiene like no other race, a fact not lost on Patrick. Her season-long diet consists of egg whites, oatmeal and light sandwiches.

?During the race, I will have a drink mix that?s a blend of carbs and protein,? Patrick said. ?I managed okay in the 500 at Darlington last week, but it?s going to be a fair bit hotter. Hydration is going to be the most important element.?

Temperatures are expected to reach 86 degrees tonight placing an added emphasis on personal fitness. This plays right into the hands of Carl Edwards and Mark Martin, two of the most physically fit drivers in the garage.

Edwards has been featured on the cover of Health and Fitness Magazine while Martin is competing in Sprint Cup at age 55, both due to their extreme workout regimens. Edwards has a specialized training routine in preparation, led by his personal trainer, Dean Golich, and they aren?t telling.

?Dean?s given me some specifics instructions,? Edwards said. ?It?s going to be a hot, long, race and while I?m not going to tell you what I do, I am prepared for it.

?All of these races are tough and sometimes the ones you think are going to be tough aren?t as bad. There are some days you just don?t feel as good and some of my hardest races have been ones that I didn?t think were going to be that hard.?

Edwards did give away one secret ? try not to eat in the middle of the 600.

?They used to have a little snack box in my car, but I don?t do that anymore,? Edwards said. ?This race is one that maybe if you had something to eat in the middle of the race it would be good, but you?ve got to be careful about eating something when you?re under that much stress and you?ve got the belts tight and everything. I?ve learned that you?ve got to be careful about what you eat during a race, even if it seems really simple, so I just don?t eat.?

Economists cut India's growth forecasts

Within days of Morgan Stanley and StanChart revising downwards the country's growth forecasts for the current fiscal, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America-Merrill Lynch on Friday steeply scaled down their gross domestic product estimates for India [ Images ] to 6.6 and 6.5 per cent respectively for 2012-13.

These two revisions are the lowest forecasts yet, as the projection of Morgan Stanley is 6.8 per cent while that of StanChart is at 7.1 per cent, and are drastically lower than the government forecast of 7.6 per cent.

"We are revising our GDP growth forecast for FY13 down to 6.6 per cent from 7.2 per cent, largely due to a weaker investment outlook in part driven by domestic policy uncertainties and more back-ended and lesser monetary policy easing, and in part by prevailing global uncertainties," Goldman Sachs India economist Tushar Poddar said in a note.

Meanwhile, Bank of America-Merrill Lynch India economist Indranil Sen Gupta, pegging the March quarter GDP at 6 per cent, said FY13 growth will be just 6.5 per cent if Greece stays in the euro, and will be sharply lower at 5.5 per cent if Athens decides to dump the European monetary union.

"We cut our FY13 growth forecast by 30 bps to 6.5 per cent from our previous forecast, with the European crisis dragging on more than anticipated.

In case of a Greece exit, growth can fall to 5.5 per cent.

Meanwhile, March quarter growth would also come in at an anaemic 6 per cent, pulling our FY12 growth forecast down by 20 bps to 6.7 per cent for FY12," Sen Gupta said.

On May 21, Morgan Stanley cut India's growth forecast to 6.8 per cent from 7.5 per cent.

"With policy makers continuing to delay action to address the unsustainable bad mix of growth, we now think that GDP growth is likely to face another leg down. A deeper and longer growth slowdown is up ahead.

Accordingly, we expect GDP to decelerate to near crisis level at 6.8 per cent this fiscal," Morgan Stanley managing director Chetan Ahya said.

Goldman's Ahya also said that the core WPI inflation will head above 8 per cent by the fiscal end.

On Wednesday, Standard Chartered Bank too revised downwards the GDP growth forecast to 7.1 per cent from earlier estimate of 7.4 per cent and inflation forecast revised to 7.2 per cent from 6.5 per cent projected earlier.

"We revise down our growth forecast to 7.1 per cent for FY13 on relatively restrictive monetary policy and inflation at 7.2 per cent," the British lender had said in a research note.

Goldman on Friday also revised upwards its inflation forecast for the fiscal saying, "we are also revising up our FY13 core inflation forecast to 6.5 per cent from 5 per cent due to significantly higher food prices and an increase in domestically administered fuel prices."

Accordingly, Poddar of Goldman said he is also reducing his rate cut forecast to 50 bps by 4Q, from 75 bps earlier, due to higher inflation in the near-term.

"Our rate cuts forecast is now more back-loaded than earlier.

"We, however, continue to think weaker core inflation, and sustained weakness in industrial activity will give the Reserve Bank space to cut rates in 4Q," Poddar said.

On interest rate cuts by RBI, Goldman is expecting lesser and more back-ended monetary policy easing.

Therefore, we now expect a much shallower recovery in investment demand, and are shaving off 40 bps of contribution from investment to GDP growth.

On the rupee, Poddar said, "while we recognise clear near-term risks to the rupee/dollar forecasts, we think the current sell-off is overdone. We have taken a more sanguine view in the medium-term.

"Based on the central bank's preference to intervene to stabilise the rupee, and the balance of payment being funded on a full-year basis, we are keeping our 3, 6, and 12-month forecasts unchanged at 53, 50.7 and 50, for the rupee respectively."

Citing the reasons for lower forecast, BofA-ML's Sen Gupta said though several lead indicators such as business confidence, OECD lead indicator, and earnings have improved to neutral from negative, a growth turnaround is likely only after lending rates come off say by 50 bps to reverse the slowdown in loan demand.

On the rupee, Sen Gupta said the local unit could temporarily hit 60 to a dollar as it expects that the dollar will strengthen to 1.20 to a euro on safe haven effects.

At the same time, he said, "the silver lining is that oil may fall to $60 a barrel from base case $119 if Greece exits.

"This would open the door for 2008-type aggressive RBI rate cuts to support growth by substantially easing pressures on inflation and the twin deficits".

Stating that a $10 per barrel drop can swing the trade deficit by 0.4 per cent of GDP and the fiscal deficit by 0.2 per cent of GDP, he said, "It is for this reason we would still expect India to stage the fastest recovery after China, a la 2008, in the event of Greece exit".

As of late, the reporting on the phone has died down.

But, right in plain view Facebook is assembling the core applications needed for successful smartphone operating system.

This week it rolled out "Facebook Camera." Every smartphone needs a camera application. Facebook's camera app, which has some filters and loads straight to Facebook would check that box. (It's also about to own Instagram, which is a pretty good camera app in its own right.)

It has a "Facebook Messages" application. This would be Facebook's answer to BBM, iMessage, or even text messages.

It has a Facebook app store. This would be its answer to the App Store, or Google Play.

And it's reportedly interested in buying Opera. If it is going to have a mobile OS, it's going to need a web browser. Apple has Safari, Google has Chrome, Amazon has Silk, and Microsoft has Internet Explorer.

Other core apps like contacts and a calendar are already baked into Facebook. The only biggie that's missing is Maps. Facebook is close with Microsoft, so it could probably get a Bing-based mapping app.

We don't know when, or even if, Facebook will actually release a phone. But, if it does happen, it will have had plenty of experience figuring out the basic applications every smartphone needs to be successful.

As D?Banj?s ?Oliver Twist? continues to climb the UK charts and debuts at no.9 on the Billboard UK Charts,?D?Banj seems to be everywhere these days.

A short while ago, we saw him with Sarkodie in Ghana and then, later on, back home here in Nigeria with Ikechukwu at his Industry Night. Again, we saw pictures of him with Davido in the US and UK and as of yesterday, we saw pictures of him at the Cannes Film Festival with his G.O.O.D. Music family.

So, it?s absolutely surprising to see him in the UK again, at Plumsted Manor School with the students dancing with him to ?Oliver Twist?,?and, if I?m this surprised, imagine how the students felt.

Gail Goodman: Small Business Marketing: Grow Your Business the ...

It's National Small Business Week, May 20 - 26 in the United States. Why celebrate small business? It's our economic engine. Small businesses create over two-thirds of net new jobs, and more than half of all working Americans either own or work for a small business. Small Business Week celebrates small business owners and their successes and highlights their challenges, which include growing their businesses in the face of rapid change, from national and state regulations to you guessed it -- marketing!

The inspiration for my new book, Engagement Marketing: How Small Business Wins in a Socially Connected World, came about from years of watching, learning from and listening to small business owners. The conversations would go something like this:

Gail: "What's your marketing goal?"

Business owner: "More business and new customers."

Gail: "Where does the majority of your revenue come from today? How much is repeat sales?"

Business Owner: "Around 90 percent of our monthly revenue is repeat sales; roughly 10 percent is new business."

Gail: "Ten percent new business is outstanding! How much of that comes from customer referrals or word-of-mouth?"

Business owner: "Hmm, I'd guess roughly 90% of our new customers come from customer referrals."

Then I'd ask the big question: "So how much of your marketing time and dollars are focused on growing repeat sales and referrals?"

People would look at me as if I'd spouted two heads! Repeat sales and referrals just happen, they would inform me. They were doing nothing to grow that part of the business. That's what Engagement Marketing is all about.

Engagement Marketing is based on a simple but powerful idea: Socially visible customer engagement will increases sales by driving more repeat sales and more word-of-mouth referrals.

It's much easier, less expensive and infinitely more fun to interact with people you already know -- your existing customers. Doing so drives repeat business. But engaging them has a second benefit as well.

When customers engage with you, their friends and networks see the Likes, shares, +1s, comments, and endorsements -- and give them far more credibility than any marketing message you could ever deliver. This engagement gives you surprisingly targeted reach because your customers' networks are filled with people just like them - people who are also great prospects for you.

The Engagement Marketing Cycle is comprised of three steps: Experience, Entice, Engage.

Step one: Provide customers with a WOW! experience that is memorable and authentic

I finally decided to upgrade my kitchen knives. One day I walked into this fantastic local kitchen store and became a little overwhelmed at the number of options. German? Japanese? And which styles did I need? The owner proceeded to explain the choices, ask me about my cooking style and then let me try various knives by chopping carrots right there on the counter. Sold! And WOW!

Even better, every time my husband and I have people over for dinner, I tell them my knife story, rave about how sharp they are, and about this great local store.

It's this desire to share our experiences that begins the first step in the Engagement Marketing Cycle: Give your customers a memorable experience that will make them willing to connect with you and, if you are really lucky, post about it on their social networks.

Tip: Make your experiences authentic. Look at how prospects and customers interact with your business (whether it's on the phone, in-person or online) and then find your opportunities to rise about the ordinary. A consulting firm, for example, could reach out mid-project to make sure everything is going well. A specialty wine store could help customers pair wines with foods for dinner parties.

Step two: Entice customers to stay in touch by asking for permission to engage with them.

True story: Constant Contact hired a branding agency years ago. They did great work! But, the agency never kept in touch with me -- so I forgot their name. Now I can't refer others to them even though I would willingly. Moral: Out of sight is literally out of mind.

To extend the WOW! you've created with your customers or clients -- and to make sure they don't forget about you -- you have to ask if it's okay to engage with them via email lists and social networks.

Tip: Offer something in return for the "ask." For Facebook Likes, a retail business could offer discounts or special sales notices to followers only. A B2B company can offer a meaty whitepaper or report.

Step three: Engage with people by giving them content they'll want to share with their friends and networks.

When I view my own Facebook newsfeed, I look for those posts that have some engagement -- or ask me to engage. Jumping in on a conversation is fun -- as is reading other people's comments.

Although engagement is what drives social media (and those repeat sales and endorsements), many marketers are still focused on amassing followers versus working to engage those followers. Engagement is not a one-way street. If all your audience does is listen to you, then you're falling down on the job. The goal is to drive participation.

Tip: Post content geared toward each social media platform. Writing one post and using an automation tool to send it out to each platform is lazy. Put your creative chops to work and create custom content that takes into consideration how each platform works. Twitter is great for short, smart blasts. Facebook and G+ give you room to expand plus let you include images and video. Then, invite people to participate in the conversation!

Socially visible engagement drives trust.

In addition to driving repeat sales and new business, Engagement Marketing has another huge impact on your business. Someone who views your customers engaging on Facebook, reads the comments on your blog, or sees you responding to mentions on Twitter knows immediately you're a business that listens to its customers.

This positive engagement is the social proof people need to do business with you, especially if someone they know is engaging with you, too. This social proof helps build trust -- something you just cannot buy with advertising or other forms of marketing.

World powers, Iran haggle over new nuclear package

World powers pressing Iran to scale back its nuclear programme Wednesday offered a new batch of incentives that however fell short of the sanctions relief sought by Tehran, which made a counter-proposal.

A spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, the lead negotiator for the P5+1 -- the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany -- said its proposals made at the meeting in Baghdad were "of interest to Iran."

The meeting, which follows a preliminary first gathering in 15 months in Istanbul in mid-April, was meanwhile expected to go into a second, unscheduled day on Thursday, an official with the Iranian delegation said.

"There are things we can do for Iran. We hope the Iranians will come back with a positive reaction to our proposals to deal with the concerns of the international community," Ashton's spokesman said.

He gave no details but media reports said they included a revival of previous attempts at a deal whereby Iran would ship abroad its stockpiles of enriched uranium in return for fuel for a reactor producing medical isotopes.

Other incentives were reportedly easing Iranian access to aircraft parts and a possible suspension of an EU insurance ban on ships carrying Iranian oil.

But beyond a pledge not to impose any more, the package made no mention of easing the barrage of sanctions that have been piled -- with more to come in July -- on Iran over suspicions the country wants nuclear weapons.

In return for the sweeteners the P5+1 want Iran to suspend 20-percent enrichment, which they see as the most worrying part of Tehran's activities since the capability reduces the theoretical "breakout" time needed to get the bomb.

Iran however is loath to give ground on what it proudly sees as its right to a peaceful nuclear programme without the prospect that the international community will cut its economy some slack.

Iran made a counter-proposal in the Baghdad talks -- which were due to resume at 1500 GMT -- of "five items based on the principles of step-by-step and reciprocity," the official with Tehran's delegation said.

"And we are waiting for the reaction of the P5+1 during meetings this afternoon," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity and without giving more details on what the offer consisted of.

"We said to the other side that we need a comprehensive approach. We need the steps that both sides have to take to be clearly defined and there is no possibility of going back on them," the source said.

"For example, that they lift sanctions that they cannot then readopt two months later under a different pretext."

Iran's chief negotiator Saeed Jalili was due to hold bilateral meetings with Ashton and with China's representative Ma Zhaoxu but not with Washington's envoy Wendy Shermann, before the next session, the official added.

US President Barack Obama took office in January 2009 offering a radical change in approach to his predecessor, George W. Bush, in dealings with Iran, famously offering an "extended hand" to Tehran if it "unclenched its fist."

This failed, however, and Iran has since dramatically expanded its programme, including by starting in 2010 to enrich uranium to 20 percent and from January in the Fordo site deep inside a mountain near the holy city of Qom.

Israel, Washington's closest ally in the region, feels its very existence would be under threat if its arch foe gets the bomb and has refused to rule out a pre-emptive strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad insisted on Wednesday that the "production and use of weapons of mass destruction is haram (forbidden) and have no place in the Islamic Republic of Iran's defence doctrine."

One key way for Iran to win the confidence of the P5+1 was implementing the additional protocol of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which allows for more intrusive inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The IAEA also wants Iran to address allegations made in its November report that until 2003, and possibly since, Tehran had a "structured programme" of "activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device."

IAEA chief Yukiya Amano said on Tuesday after talks in Tehran that a deal on ways to go over these accusations with the Iranians would be signed "quite soon." Western reaction though was circumspect.

Ashton's spokesman meanwhile played down expectations of a dramatic breakthrough, saying that the Baghdad talks were part of what will need to be a lengthy process.

"This is the second meeting. Istanbul kicked off the process of discussions. Now we're getting on to the real substance of the matter," Michael Mann said. "We are keen to get a move on but these things can't be solved overnight."
