Child soldier's tale illustrates Mali's dirty war

SEVARE, Mali (AP) ? The boy sits with his knees tucked under his chest on the concrete floor of the police station here, his adolescent face a tableau of fear. He's still garbed in the knee-length tunic he was ordered to wear by the Islamic extremist who recruited him.

It's these same clothes, styled after those worn by the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century, which gave him away when he tried to flee earlier this week. They have now become his prison garb.

Adama Drabo is 16, and his recruitment into the ranks of a group designated as a terrorist organization, followed by his violent interrogation at the hands of the Malian army, underscores the obstacles faced by France as it tries to wash its former West African colony clean of the al-Qaida-linked fighters occupying it.

"In terms of the rules of engagement, you have to think to yourself, what will you do if a child comes up to you wearing an explosive vest? What do you do if a 12-year-old is manning a checkpoint?" says Rudolph Atallah, former director of counterterrorism for Africa at the Pentagon during the Bush administration. "It's a very difficult situation."

France, which now has around 2,500 troops on the ground, plunged headfirst into the conflict in Mali two weeks ago, after the Islamist groups that have controlled the nation's northern half since last year began an aggressive push southward. The French soldiers are equipped with night vision goggles, anti-tank mines and laser-guided bombs. However, their enemy includes the hundreds of children, some as young as 11, who have been conscripted into the rebel army.

Among those the French will have to fight are boys like Adama, the uneducated, eldest child of a poor family of rice growers, who until recently spent his days plowing fields with oxen near the village of N'Denbougou. Living just 15 miles (25 kilometers) from the central Malian town of Niono, which has become one of the frontlines in the recent war, Adama fits the profile of the types of children the Islamists have successfully recruited. His village has a single mosque, and unlike the moderate form of Islam practiced in much of Mali, the one he and his family attended preached Wahabism.

"We have observed a pattern of recruitment of child soldiers from villages that for many years have practiced a very strict form of Islam, referred to as Wahabism," says Corinne Dufka, senior researcher for West Africa at Human Rights Watch. "We estimate that hundreds of children have been recruited."

The groups allied with al-Qaida started recruiting children soon after they seized control of northern Mali last April. Rebel leaders quoted verses from the Quran which they claim describe children as the purest apprentices. Since then witnesses have described seeing children staffing checkpoints, riding in patrol vehicles, carrying out searches of cars stopped at roadblocks, as well as preparing tea and cooking food for the fighters in the towns controlled by the insurgents, says Dufka.

The United Nations children's agency said late last year that it had been able to corroborate at least 175 reported cases of child soldiers in northern Mali, bought from their impoverished parents for between $1,000 and $1,200 per child. Malian human rights officials put the total number of children recruited by the Islamists considerably higher at 1,000 ? and that was before the French intervention.

Adama, who is now being held at the Sevare gendarmerie, was hired as a cook two weeks ago by Islamist fighters in Douentza, a city controlled by the Movement for Oneness and Jihad, or MUJAO. Its members have been linked to the recent terrorist attack on a natural gas plant in Algeria, which ended in the death of at least 37 hostages, according to the Algerian government.

The teenager claims he didn't know he was working for a terrorist group, even though the insurgents who ate the macaroni he cooked carried guns, wore beards and dressed in the unfamiliar Gulf-style clothes they gave him. He says he joined them only for the money they promised they would pay at the end of each month. The police holding him say he was promised around $200 a month, several times the average monthly salary here.

Adama explains that his friends in Niono said they knew people in Sevare who would give them work. So they took a Peugeot 207 taxi to reach the town.

"It was there in the town that we met some people and they hired us to cook for them," he says. "They said that at the end of each month we would get paid. ... And so we started cooking for them."

He says that even though some of the fighters in their entourage went to fight in the Niono area, he was unaware of their battle plans. The men spoke Arabic and Tamashek, a Tuareg language, which he did not understand.

One day, when he went to the corner store, the shop owner told him a war was on, he says.

"I told my friend, 'Even if the month isn't over yet, we need to get out of here.' We walked to the next village, where we found an old man there, and we asked him if he could please give us some water? The old man said he couldn't give us any water, because we're rebels. We said, 'We're not rebels. Give us some water.' It was then that a man on a motorcycle came by. The motorcyclist said that we are wearing the clothes of the Islamic fighters."

The boys tried to run.

The friend got away. Adama was handed over to the Malian military, which in recent days has been accused of executing dozens of suspected Islamists, including a group of six men who arrived in Sevare without identity cards. Adama may have been saved by the international outcry that followed the reported executions this week, says Atallah, putting immense diplomatic pressure on Mali's ill-trained and often incompetent army to respect human rights conventions.

"I was frightened," says Adama. "They said they were going to kill me. ... They said this several times."

During the interrogation, especially on the first day, the soldiers threatened to execute Adama if he did not tell the truth, he says. They hit him, he says, and slapped him across his face. It was only on Friday, according to Adama, that the soldiers told him they would not kill him.

"For four days, they kept me in jail with two big people," he says. "I feel somewhat reassured now, but not totally reassured. Because I am still not free."

Child soldiers have been part of the fabric of African conflicts for decades now. In Liberia's civil war more than 10 years ago, drugged 12- and 13-year-olds were famously photographed toting automatic weapons and teddy bears. However, the standoff this time is between a Western army bound by the Geneva Convention and Western values on human rights, and an enemy that includes hundreds of children. One of the most active groups in northern Mali is al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, the terror network's affiliate in Africa, which originated in Algeria. In 2008, the group released a video showing a cheerful 15-year-old in Algeria who was suffering from a terminal illness, Atallah says. The Islamists convinced the boy that the best thing he could do with what remained of his life was to die for Allah, according to Atallah, who saw the recording.

"The video shows him smiling," he says. "They taught him how to drive a van. And then they filmed the van as it left, just before he detonated himself. I wouldn't put it past them to do this again."

Sundance stars sound off on gun violence in film

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) ? The Sundance Film Festival isn't home to many shoot-em-up movies, but action-oriented actors at the festival are facing questions about Hollywood's role in American gun violence.

Guy Pearce and Alexander Skarsgard are among those who say Hollywood shares in the blame.

Pearce is in Park City, Utah, to support the family drama "Breathe In," but he's pulled plenty of imaginary triggers in violent films such as "Lockdown" and "Lawless." He says Hollywood may make guns seem "cool" to the broader culture, but there are vast variations in films' approach to guns.

"Hollywood probably does play a role," Pearce said. "It's a broad spectrum though. There are films that use guns flippantly, then there are films that use guns in a way that would make you never want to look at a gun ever again ? because of the effect that it's had on the other people in the story at the time. So to sort of just say Hollywood and guns, it's a broad palette that you're dealing with, I think. But I'm sure it does have an effect. As does video games, as do stories on the news. All sorts of things probably seep into the consciousness."

Skarsgard, who blasted away aliens in "Battleship," says he agrees that Hollywood has some responsibility for how it depicts violence on-screen.

"When (NRA executive director) Wayne LaPierre blames it on Hollywood and says guns have nothing to do with it, there is a reason," he said. "I mean, I'm from Sweden. . We do have violent video games in Sweden. My teenage brother plays them. He watches Hollywood movies. We do have insane people in Sweden and in Canada. But we don't have 30,000 gun deaths a year.

"Yes, there's only 10 million people in Sweden as opposed to over 300 (million) in the United States. But the numbers just don't add up. There are over 300 million weapons in this country. And they help. They do kill people."

Ellen Page, who co-stars with Skarsgard in "The East," noted that gun restrictions are much more pervasive in her home country, Canada.

"You can't buy some crazy assault rifle that is made for the military to kill people. And like that to me is just like a no-brainer," she said. "Why should that just be out and be able to be purchased? That does not make me feel safe as a person."

Skarsgard says it may be time to revisit the Second Amendment.

"The whole Second Amendment discussion is ridiculous to me. Because that was written over 200 years ago, and it was a militia to have muskets to fight off Brits," he said. "The Brits aren't coming. It's 2013. Things have changed. And for someone to mail-order an assault rifle is crazy to me. They don't belong anywhere but the military to me. You don't need that to protect your home or shoot deer, you know."

The RSPB has welcomed the Home Office?s and Defra?s agreement today to fund the National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU) for another year, beginning on 1 April 2013.

The Home Office and Defra have committed ?136,000 each for the next financial year, securing the future of the unit. The current funding arrangement was due to run out at the end of March.? No decisions have been taken for funding the unit beyond 31 March 2014.

Vital

RSPB Conservation Director Martin Harper said: ?The continued support for the unit is great news. The illegal killing of birds of prey is threatening the security of some species, with the hen harrier facing imminent extinction in England as a nesting species. The unit is a vital part of the UK?s fight against wildlife crime, and we?re relieved these crime fighters have been given a further year to provide the protection our wildlife deserves.?

The NWCU is jointly funded by the Home Office and Defra, with other contributions coming from the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), ACPO Scotland, the Scottish Government and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency.

The NWCU leads the fight against serious and organised wildlife crime such as: rhino horn theft; ivory smuggling; and bird of prey persecution across the UK. The strategic unit collates intelligence and provides specialist skills and expertise to enforcement agencies including the Police and UK Border Agency. One hundred and thirty-eight MP?s have signed Early Day Motion 603 calling for Defra and the Home Office to maintain its current level of funding with long-term certainty beyond March 2013.

The work of the NWCU was warmly praised by the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee in its recent inquiry into wildlife crime and is widely recognised as punching above its weight. The Committee called on the Government to maintain the current level of funding, with longer-term certainty, to allow the unit to focus on its core duties.

Key role

Martin Harper said, ?Both Richard Benyon at Defra and Jeremy Browne at the Home Office have played a key role in securing this funding for a unit which provides great value for money. For a relatively small amount, the UK has a unit with a world-wide reputation for delivering an effective response to the threats that criminals pose to our wildlife. What we now need is for its long-term future to be secured so that it can make strategic long-term plans.?

Enzyme helps cancer cells avoid genetic instability

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Cancer cells are resourceful survivors with plenty of tricks for staying alive. Researchers have uncovered one of these stratagems, showing how cells lacking the tumor suppressor BRCA1 can resume one form of DNA repair, sparing themselves from stagnation or death. The study appears in the January 21st issue of The Journal of Cell Biology.

The BRCA1 protein helps to mend double-strand DNA breaks by promoting homologous recombination. Without it, cells can amass broken, jumbled, and fused chromosomes, which may cause them to stop growing or die. Although cells lacking BRCA1 seem like they should be vulnerable, loss of the protein instead seems to boost abnormal growth.

Recent studies have shown that cells lacking BRCA1 compensate by cutting back on 53BP1. This protein helps orchestrate a different DNA repair mechanism, nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ), and it thwarts a key step in homologous recombination. Researchers think that, in cells without BRCA1, 53BP1 spurs excessive NHEJ that can cause fatal chromosomal chaos. But with 53BP1 out of the way, the cells are able to resume homologous recombination. That might explain why cells that lack BRCA1 and eliminate 53BP1 can withstand traditional chemotherapy compounds and PARP inhibitors, a new generation of anti-cancer drugs that are in clinical trials. But how do cancer cells turn down 53BP1?

Researchers previously found that certain mutant fibroblasts increase production of cathepsin L, a protease that destroys 53BP1. BRCA1-deficient cancer cells take advantage of the same mechanism, according to a team of researchers led by Susana Gonzalo from the Washington University School of Medicine. When they cultured breast cancer cells that were missing BRCA1, the cells stopped growing. After two weeks of lethargy, however, some cells, which the researchers dubbed BOGA cells (BRCA1-deficient cells that overcome growth arrest), began to divide again. These cells showed increased levels of cathepsin L and reduced amounts of 53BP1. Eliminating cathepsin L from BOGA cells or dosing them with vitamin D, a cathepsin L inhibitor, prevented the decline in 53BP1 abundance.

To find out whether boosting cathepsin L levels enabled the cancer cells to restart homologous recombination, the researchers monitored sites of DNA damage tagged by RAD51, a protein that helps promote homologous recombination. The cells that had stopped growing did not display RAD51 foci, but these foci were prevalent in BOGA cells with reduced 53BP1. Removing cathepsin L from BOGA cells increased 53BP1 levels and diminished the number of RAD51 foci.

If cells can't perform homologous recombination, they turn to repair mechanisms such as NHEJ that can lead to jumbled chromosomes. However, after DNA-breaking doses of radiation, BOGA cells exhibited few chromosome defects. The number of these flaws climbed after the researchers stabilized 53BP1 levels by inhibiting cathepsin L or trimming its abundance.

The team then analyzed tumor samples from breast cancer patients. Researchers suspect that cathepsin L attacks 53BP1 by entering the nucleus. Samples from patients with BRCA1 mutations or with triple-negative breast cancer?an aggressive form of the disease?showed high levels of nuclear cathepsin L and reduced quantities of 53BP1. That suggests tumors in these patients hike the amounts of cathepsin L in the nucleus to break down 53BP1 and restore homologous recombination.

"It's a new pathway that explains how breast cancer cells lose 53BP1," says Gonzalo. How cancer cells boost nuclear cathepsin L levels is unclear, she notes.

Triple-negative breast cancers are currently identified by their lack of Her2 and the estrogen and progesterone receptors. The work suggests that another trio of measurements?the amounts of 53BP1, cathepsin L, and vitamin D receptor in the nucleus?might help identify patients that are resistant to current breast cancer treatments. These people might respond to cathepsin inhibitors, some of which are undergoing animal testing. These compounds might steer the cells away from homologous recombination and leave them vulnerable to other therapies.

Australian firefighters test data-transmitting pills to monitor biometrics during work

Australian firefighters swallow datatransmitting pills to monitor the stress of fighting fires

A new swallowable pill has been trialled with 50 firefighters in Australia, aimed at monitoring body temperatures and other vital readings when working under extreme conditions. Using Equivital's EQ02 LifeMonitor capsule, the pill transmits metrics to a device housed on the chest. This then sends data on skin temperature, heart rate and respiration rate to an external computer. If a firefighter's core body temperature is increasing too quickly, they can then be moved from the frontline to a recovery area, hopefully reducing accidents and deaths caused by heat exhaustion.

Until now, the standard method involved measuring body temperatures through the ear, but this new method -- which was also used to monitor Felix Baumgartner's 23-mile drop to Earth -- offers a faster, more effective way of monitoring multiple vital signs. Research has so far focused on monitoring a firefighters' core temperature when they've been exposed to temperatures between from -3 to 124 degrees Celsius for about 20 minutes, but according to News.com.au, testing will continue on the Equivital capsules, with temperatures likely to go as high as 600 degrees Celsius -- about 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit. We're just hoping that electrical firewands are next on the list.

It?s important that if you?re linking on someone else?s site for internet marketing that you make sure your link is a ?do-follow? link. You can click the page source of any link and look at the HTML. Unless it specifically says something to extent of ?do not follow," you know you?re safe here. Always be sure to check this.

Use forums to gain readers. Posting a teaser paragraph in several different forums can get people?s attention very quickly. In addition, your business will be easier to find online because of your detailed key phrases. Try entering a search for ?shoes" and then enter a search for ?men?s extra wide shoes" and see what a difference a niche can make.

Banner ads are increasingly being blocked with extensions in browsers, effectively deleting your ads from sites.

Creating a site map is very helpful for both search engines and visitors. It will help to find all of your pages, especially if you have a larger site. There are free tools that will help you create XML sitemaps, which are used by the major search engines to index webpages accurately.

Keeping yourself motivated is an important part of internet marketing and it is hard to keep your enthusiasm up if you keep jumping from project to project. Try sticking with just one project and stay with it until you see positive results. It may take some discipline, but it will be worth the effort.

America's national parks weigh solitude against cellular access

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - As cell phones, iPods and laptops creep steadily into every corner of modern life, America's national parks have stayed largely off the digital grid, among the last remaining outposts of ringtone-free human solitude.

For better or worse, that may soon change.

Under pressure from telecommunications companies and a growing number of park visitors who feel adrift without mobile-phone reception, the airwaves in such grand getaway destinations as Yellowstone National Park may soon be abuzz with new wireless signals.

That prospect has given pause to a more traditional cohort of park visitors who cherish the unplugged tranquility of the great outdoors, fearing an intrusion of mobile phones - and the sound of idle chatter - will diminish their experience.

Some have mixed emotions. Stephanie Smith, a 50-something Montana native who visits Yellowstone as many as six times a year, said she prefers the cry of an eagle to ring tones.

But she also worries that future generations may lose their appreciation for the value of nature and the need to preserve America's outdoor heritage if a lack of technology discourages them from visiting.

"You have to get there to appreciate it," Smith said. "It's a new world - and technology is a part of it."

Balancing the two aesthetics has emerged as the latest challenge facing the National Park Service as managers in at least two premier parks, Yellowstone and Glacier national parks, consider recent requests to install new telecommunications towers or upgrade existing ones.

There is no system-wide rule governing cellular facilities in the 300 national parks, national monuments and other units the agency administers nationwide. Wireless infrastructure decisions are left up to the managers of individual park units.

The agency's mission statement requires it to protect park resources and the visitor experience, but each individual experience is unique, said Lee Dickinson, a special-uses program manager for the Park Service.

"I've had two visitors calling me literally within hours of each other who wanted exactly the opposite experience: One saying he didn't vacation anywhere without electronic access and the other complaining he was disturbed by another park visitor ordering pizza on his cell phone," Dickinson said.

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

Wireless supporters say more is at stake than the convenience of casual phone conversations. Cellular providers say new wireless infrastructure will boost public safety by improving communications among park rangers and emergency responders.

They argue that the ability to download smartphone applications that can deliver instant information on plants and animals will also enrich park visitors' experiences.

"Our customers are telling us that having access to technology will enhance their visit to wild areas," said Bob Kelley, spokesman for Verizon Wireless, which is seeking to install a new 100-foot cell tower at Yellowstone.

Rural communities that border the national parks also stand to benefit from enlarged cellular coverage areas.

On the other side of the debate, outdoor enthusiasts worry that bastions of quiet reflection could be transformed into noisy hubs where visitors yak on cell phones and fidget with electronic tablets, detracting from the ambience of such natural wonders as Yellowstone's celebrated geyser Old Faithful.

Expanding cellular reception may even compromise safety by giving some tourists a false sense of security in the back country, where extremes in weather and terrain test even the most skilled outdoorsman, according to the National Parks Conservation Association.

Tim Stevens, the association's Northern Rockies director, said distractions like meandering moose already challenge the attention of motorists clogging park roads at the height of the summer tourist season.

"People brake in the middle of the road to watch animals. The added distraction of a wireless signal - allowing a driver to text Aunt Madge to say how great the trip is - could have disastrous consequences," he said.

Yellowstone already offers some limited mobile-phone service, afforded by four cellular towers previously erected in developed sections of the park.

But vast swathes of America's oldest national park, which spans nearly 3,500 square miles across the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, still lack wireless reception in an age dominated by Wi-Fi and iPad users who expect access even in the most remote locations.

Park officials see definite signs that a portion of the roughly 3 million annual visitors to Yellowstone, which crafted a wireless plan in 2008, are finding the lack of cell phone coverage disconcerting.

Park spokesman Al Nash said he routinely fields calls from anxious relatives of Yellowstone visitors unable to contact their loved ones.

"They say, ?My gosh, my niece, daughter or parents went to Yellowstone, and we haven't heard from them for three days,'" he said.

The First Half-Hour Of Cancer - By Andrew Sullivan - The Daily Beast

6863249648_c043bc4ce0_o

On his blog The Letting Go, Michael Popp recounts the initial moments in which he was curtly informed of his leukemia, "as if [I] was being asked if [I] wanted a receipt."

The doctor scribbles down two numbers. Its 4:30 they tell me. You need to get to a sperm bank immediately. The chemotherapy will make you infertile and if you have any desire to have children, you need to call these numbers and bank. I had known, for nearly 4 minutes that I had cancer. It hadn?t even begin to phase me and now I would be infertile. I picked up the paper, still unsure of everything that was going on and began to beg a woman with a thick accent on the other line for an immediate appointment.

On his way to deposit the sperm, he called his girlfriend:

The phone rang and she answered. I explained, rather plainly, I had cancer.

My chances of survival were good and that everything would be okay. As I told her, it became real. My voice began to break up as I made it block by block towards the bank. I was having trouble holding it together as I said the words to her, trying to reassure her there wasn?t anything to worry about. I was losing it, I told her I?d call her back, I couldn?t bear showing her how upset I was, I needed her to believe what I had said, knowing that I myself was completely unsure of what to expect. I had only known I had cancer for 15 minutes. I knew nothing.

There are many different methods for promoting your business online, but one of the most effective remains the email campaign.

Weighing Your Choices

For messages, you have three choices of software, each with disadvantages and different benefits. It is possible to be your own server and install software on your computer. Online server youre using you can install software. Or an ASP hosted service can be joined by you.

Decreasing advantage of a managed server is that getting your e-mails sent can be your hosts concern. States Dr. Ralph Wilson, of Wilson Internet Services, With computer or web server pc software, ostensibly youre responsible to have them delivered Whereas if youre paying someone else for that company, its their job, and a lot of them take it very seriously. A hosted machine starts with a monthly fee for 500 or 1000 messages and the price creates as your mail database increases.

With computer machine application, the largest advantage could be the cost. You can pay an one-time fee for a desktop machine and run it forever. Leasing a web server can be relatively low priced.

Beating the Blockers

If you use computer or server based application, there are a few general guidelines you can follow to simply help your e-mails make it to your customers inboxes.

1. Prevent symptoms of junk. A number of traits that trigger spam filters. You are able to boost your deliverability by avoiding certain problems in your subject lines:

All caps are used by dont.

Dont use HTML messages that are mainly design.

Dont make an effort to trick filters by replacing letters with asterisks or breaking phrases up with punctuation marks. Filters are getting better, and you could wind up on a black list.

Dont use bad HTML.

Large or small fonts are used by dont. Stick to H1, H2, or H3 heading tags.

2. Consider sender accreditation

Bonded sender organizations as and have connections with internet service providers. Reliable firms can go through these companies to obtain secure passage past spam filters. Theres a price for this service, but its an ideal way to make sure your emails are getting delivered.

What things to Try to find in a Hosted Server

If you choose to use a hosted service, there are an amount of things you must ask before joining:

What steps do they take to prevent spammers from registering? A great host organization could have procedures in position, such as established opt-in, to make sure that theyre not allowing spammers to participate.

Do they feature conversion monitoring? Just like an offer tracking system, many published computers now let you see how many of your e-mail people clicked through to your site, how many click-throughs led to sales, and how much money you produced from your campaign.

What type of customer care do they provide? You are able to usually tell the solution to that question simply by just how long it takes them to respond to your questions. Ask if they offer complete phone service and if they charge extra for the company.

However, you choose to market your business, dont overlook the power of email marketing to increase your client base and boost your sales volume.

Obama's refusal to negotiate on debt ceiling: Smart or risky?

President Obama reiterated in a press conference Monday that he will not negotiate over the debt ceiling. But Republicans say they want dollar-for-dollar spending cuts, and some are willing to threaten default.

President Obama has not budged from his stark line in the sand: When it comes to the debt ceiling, he will not negotiate. Period.

In a press conference Monday, he reiterated this position, stating: "Republicans in Congress have two choices here. They can act responsibly and pay America's bills. Or they can act irresponsibly and put America through another economic crisis. But they will not collect a ransom in exchange for not crashing the American economy."?

Mr. Obama made clear ? as he did during the 2011 debt-ceiling crisis ? that raising the debt ceiling "does not authorize more spending; it simply allows the country to pay for spending that Congress has already committed to." The difference this time around, however, is that while Obama says he's ready to have a "vigorous debate" on debt reduction, he also says that debate must be separate from Congress taking action on the debt ceiling. And if Republicans decide to block such an action, the consequences will be all on them.

The problem, of course, is that Republicans are taking an equally firm stand. House Speaker John Boehner has vowed to raise the debt ceiling ? which could hit its limit as early as mid-February ? only if he gets dollar-for-dollar spending cuts. Mr. Boehner reiterated this position in a statement released after the president's press conference, which read:??The American people do not support raising the debt ceiling without?reducing government spending at the same time. The consequences of failing to increase the debt ceiling are?real, but so too are the consequences of allowing our spending problem to?go unresolved.?

No one knows how this crisis will unfold, of course, but here's our best guess: Republicans will eventually blink.?

In fact, we believe Obama pretty much secured this outcome from the moment he declared that he simply would not negotiate on the matter.

True, it's a potentially risky position to take ? since, if Republicans don't back down, the president will either have to go back on his pledge or allow what he himself has described as a catastrophic economic event to take place.

And it is, of course, a far less conciliatory approach than the one the president took back in 2011. That time around, Obama was already in the middle of a tough reelection campaign, and the economy was more fragile. He couldn't risk even appearing willing to risk a default. As a result, Obama and Boehner spent months trying to work out a "grand bargain" on deficit reduction, which ultimately imploded.

But the president has clearly learned some lessons from the whole ugly episode ? which resulted in a credit downgrade for the United States ? and the follow-up "fiscal cliff" negotiations that took place last month. One is that a grand bargain may simply be impossible right now, given the divisions between the parties. While that doesn't mean those negotiations should be shelved, it doesn't necessarily make sense to keep tying them to economic deadlines that create crises.

House GOP sharply divided on $51B Sandy aid bill

Photo credit: Steven Sunshine | From left, Rep. Nita Lowey, Rep. Peter King, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy joined other elected officials, labor leaders and investment bankers at a news conference in Manhattan to discuss the push for federal dollars for the state and region in the wake of superstorm Sandy. (Dec. 14, 2012)

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans are sharply divided on the $51 billion superstorm Sandy emergency funding package as it nears a vote in the House on Tuesday.

New York and New Jersey Republicans insist the House must pass the entire package this week, but fiscal conservatives have balked, saying only the most immediate needs should be passed in an emergency funding bill.

"This bill is about $50 billion. That averages out to be about $450 from every household in the country," said Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.), a longtime budget hawk. "So I think they have a right to know that money is actually going for emergency repairs."

McClintock has proposed amendments that would limit funding to only the amount that could be spent in the next nine months -- an estimated $4 billion. The rest would have to go through regular congressional budget procedures.

Whether the package passes the House depends largely on Northeast lawmakers winning enough Republican votes to overcome such opposition, Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) said. He expressed frustration with McClintock and others seeking to clamp down on disaster recovery funding -- saying it is a break from the past and a changing of the rules.

"You need to have money upfront" for rebuilding subways that Sandy destroyed, roads it damaged and beaches it washed out, King said. "That is part of the emergency."

McClintock's amendments "would be a total rewriting of the rules," King said.

But in a climate in which Republicans are seeking to reduce the government's $16 trillion debt with deep spending cuts, McClintock has plenty of company among the House GOP. More than a quarter of Republican House members voted two weeks ago against a $9.7 billion measure needed to allow federal flood insurance claims to be paid. The bill was not considered controversial.

Many more Republicans are expected to vote against the rest of the package.

GOP House members last week filed 45 amendments to the underlying $18 billion aid bill and an accompanying $33 billion amendment seeking to reduce the size, scope and cost of the aid.

"We'll have to fight," King said. "But it's also up to the Rules Committee and the House leadership."

The House Rules Committee Monday afternoon will meet to determine which of the 77 amendments that were submitted by Friday will be allowed. It is expected to knock out many of them.

Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas), the committee chairman, has not indicated what he plans to do. Nor has House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) or House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.).

If the committee allows only one or two pertinent amendments, King said, "I'm confident we can beat them."

After the Rules Committee determines which amendments go forward, the package will go to the House floor for debate and votes on the amendments and the final bill.

With Democratic support assured, the Sandy recovery package will rise or fall on whether King and other backers can find at least 20 Republicans to vote for it. Approval will require at least 217 votes in a House made up of 200 Democrats and 233 Republicans.

King said he thinks he has the 20 or so votes he will need.

New York and New Jersey GOP lawmakers account for 11 or 12 ayes, he said, leaving eight or nine votes he hopes to pick up from sympathetic colleagues in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida.

"I'm not taking anything for granted," he said.

93% Barbara

All Critics (44) | Top Critics (13) | Fresh (41) | Rotten (3)

[Leaves] you drained and horrified.

Sometimes, the sun shines and the wind blows fresh and the very elements that make for intense hardship also open a window on intense joy.

Hoss is mesmerizing as a woman who holds it all together to the point of losing herself.

It's one terrific film, as smart, thoughtful and emotionally involving as just about anything that's out there.

It's a quiet film built of careful details.

"Barbara" re-visits the quiet, everyday tragedies of the Iron Curtain era, when paranoia ran deep and for very good reasons.

Subtly intriguing and ambiguous, it's filled with suspicion and subterfuge.

Despite the limited scope of its predictable narrative, "Barbara" remains a compelling character study thanks to Nina Hoss's enigmatic performance in the title role.

Christian Petzold's latest thriller threatens to cross over the line from minimalism to nihilism.

Both insightful and poignant, but not mawkish...an intriguing character study set against the backdrop of a dark time in history.

The plotting, the planning and the deepening relationships don't make for kinetic action, but they are the foundation for a smart, engrossing film.

Hoss' acting is a marvel of subtlety; her body language is precisely calibrated to reveal a great deal about the character's inner feelings by the slightest changes of posture and facial expression.

...a slow building character study where looks and actions speak louder than words because of an oppressive political climate.

Barbara is Hoss' fifth film with Petzold, and the movie rests on the depth and subtlety of their working relationship.

An intimate meditation on freedom set in East Germany at the end of the Cold War, but this time, it's personal.

Somehow, in this stirring narrative, Barbara manages to keep hold of her principles, and her humanity and courage, and battles to save a dissident teenage girl whose life the Communists are trying to destroy.

Apple TV release date, rumours and images

Blogs

Following Apple CEO Tim Cook?s comments that the television is an area of ?intense interest? for the company, the web has lit up with speculation about what the future could hold for Apple?s widely anticipated living room take-over. Most of the excitement surrounds the idea that Apple might have an actual television in the pipeline (fuelled by?Steve Jobs? comments in his biography?that he had ?cracked? television). However, many are speculating that Apple might intend only to update the Apple TV set top box in such a way that Apple might be able to transform television without even having to build a box of their own.

Will Apple launch a new Apple TV or an Apple Television?

Reports claim that there is a fully-fledged Apple television already in production, however, even the most excitable of analysts thinks it?s unlikely that Apple will launch a television set this year. Instead it seems much more likely that the company will be revamping its Apple TV set top box with new features.

There is a school of thought that Apple would be better off concentrating its efforts on?developing its current Apple TV?device, rather than pursuing the idea of an actual television.

However, some reports suggest that even the Apple TV, for so many years descried by Apple as a hobby, is a dead end. The?market for set-top boxes?is a growing one, according to HIS iSuppli, but it is still insignificant when compared to other markets, such as smartphones. One reason for the lack of popularity of set-top boxes is that more and more smart TVs have the functionality built in. So why buy a separate box.

Whether it turns out to be a lucrative market or not, all eyes are on Apple to fix it, and if the company doesn?t do anything relating to television this year it?s likely to disappoint many and, perhaps unfairly, attract criticism.

New Apple TV release date

So, given that the likely hood of Apple revamping the Apple TV is high, when are we likely to see the new box?

Apple last updated the Apple TV in March 2012. The third generation model looked and acted exactly the same as the previous model, but added 1080p video support. The launch came in conjunction with Apple TV Software Update 5.0, which bought the new features (with the exception of 1080p) to older Apple TVs. Changes include an interface overhaul, access to your purchased movies for streaming, the ability to purchase movies directly from your Apple TV, and access to Genius Playlists and Mixes in your iTunes Match music and Photo Stream.

A new fourth generation Apple TV could well launch exactly one year later in March 2013. However, we believe a new Apple TV is likely to launch in conjunction with an update to iOS. We expect to see iOS 7 at WWDC in June, and believe there is a possibility of the new iPhone and iPad operating system being rolled out into the Apple TV, along with access to iOS Apps on that device.

New Apple TV 4 ? leaked images

It?s unlikely that the design of the Apple TV will change from the current model. What may change is the ports on the back.

Currently the Apple TV features the following ports: HDMI2, Optical audio, 10/100BASE-T Ethernet, Built-in IR receiver and Micro-USB (for service and support).

Thunderbolt might be a start, then users could connect their Apple TV to an Apple Thunderbolt Display and pretend that they own the mythical Apple Television. Currently the Apple TV can only connect to a HD TV with an HDMI cable. Many who have decried the Apple TV?s lack of a hard drive would be pleased if the company made the USB service port accessible for plugging in a hard drive.

New Apple TV rumours ? Bluetooth

Reports are suggesting that Apple?s set top box may gain Bluetooth functionality in a move that could set that device on its way to taking over the living room.

If?Apple was to bring Bluetooth to Apple TV,?users would be able to use a Bluetooth keyboard with the Apple TV, making it easier to add text (currently it is necessary to scroll through the alphabet, selecting one letter at a time with the remote control). The ability to use a keyboard with the Apple TV would make navigation of the iTunes Store and YouTube much easier.

Not only would typing be a breeze, you will be able to use arrow keys for navigation, the Return key to play or pause, and the Escape key to back-step.

It?s unlikely that the Bluetooth connection would be used to connect to speakers ? speakers are more likely to use Airplay. Nor will the Apple TV connect to the Mac via Bluetooth.

Another advantage of Bluetooth connectivity, it could open up a raft of third party remotes.

New Apple TV rumours ? Siri voice control??

A Bluetooth connected remote could also include a mic for Siri input, allowing users to control the Apple TV via speech.

New Apple TV rumours ? DVR and cloud based recording?

Apple is said to be in talks with cable companies in the US, hoping to come to an agreement that would allow the Apple TV to be used as a DVR (digital video recorder).

According?to the Wall Street Journal report, the DVR version of the Apple TV would let customers store TV shows in the cloud to be watched when they like. It would also allow users to access the TV shows they had recorded on the iPhone or iPad.

Sounds like a great idea. Such a facility would turn the Apple TV into more than a mere streaming device and increase the content available to users. However, it has been reported that one of the major hangups is?resistance by content providers?to give Apple maker permission to make their programming available in this way.

New Apple TV rumours ? Apple to be the new Foxtel

Another suggestion is that Apple could set itself up as an alternative to the cable and satellite TV providers. Imagine Apple going head to head with Sky, Foxtel? And don?t forget it would also be competing with the free TV services from Freeview.

In Australia, and in the US and elsewhere, Apple would face strong competition, from broadcasters and established platforms for free TV.

New Apple TV rumours ? TV as apps ??

An alternative idea would be that in the future we will be able to subscribe to content in the form of apps. Currently you can buy a series pass to a programme you like, with that programme delivered to your device each week. Could a production company package up their programming in an app and allow subscribers to download the content to their devices, effectively cutting out the middle man?

Former Apple exec Jean-Louis Gass?e writes: ?Cook has one thing right: The set-top box experience does place one back in time by 20 to 30 years. The solution??Channels, shows, special events should all be presented as apps. Click, pay and play, with standard fare for free. Catch the 6pm news when you get home at 9.30; watch two programmes side-by-side with Android 7 or iOS 9, all on your screen of choice: smartphone, tablet, PC or TV?.

Gassee notes that the obstacle is the ?tangled, encrusted business models that the Comcasts, CBSs, and Disneys cling to out of fear that Apple will wrest control of their content, that they?ll be disintermediated ? la iTunes or the iPhone/iPad App Store.?

New Apple TV rumours ? gaming???

We have previously speculated that the?Apple TV could become a games console, with iOS already being a popular gaming platform.

The rumour that Apple could turn the Apple TV into a games console has been running for some time.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter claimed Apple had a clear strategy to turn the Apple TV into an all round entertainment system.

?I think Apple has a deliberate strategy. They want to see what they can do with the handhelds ? iPod Touch and iPhone ? first, then move into console games,? Pachter said. ?Apple TV is the device that they can turn into a console, and they have essentially the same goals as Microsoft ? to turn Apple TV into an entertainment and Internet hub.?

New Apple TV rumours ? 802.11ac networking ??

Apple looks likely to add a preliminary version of?802.11ac?to its Apple TV as well as the Airport base stations as soon as the next major product line refresh.

802.11ac has the capacity to wirelessly network a TV, DVR, smart phone, and sound system, and allow access through an internet-connected device.

Sometimes referred to as ?Gig Wifi? of 5G Wi-Fi, 802.11ac is the successor to 802.11n. However, the standard is still in Draft, not having received final approval by the IEEE, yet. This approval isn?t likely to come until later in 2013. This doesn?t mean that Apple will wait until the standard is approved ? Apple has shipped products using draft versions of wireless standards in the past (see 802.11n).

New Apple TV rumours ? test run for the Apple television ? ??

The question is whether these new features would be enough for Apple TV to transform television. It?s fair to say that Apple could test out these ideas on the current device before launching an actual television set onto the market, if that is its plan.

Junior dos Santos claims personal problems at root of poor performance against Cain Velasquez

Posted by Brendhan Conlan on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 3:30 pm? 7 Comments?

Velasquez v Dos SantosThe Junior dos Santos fans saw a few weeks ago in a heavyweight title-bout with Cain Velasquez at UFC 155 was far from the fighter folks had come to know during the former champion?s run in the organization leading up to the tilt. In the headlining clash, Dos Santos was outclassed in every department, eating strike after strike without ever really returning fire, and suffered a clear-cut Unanimous Decision loss as a result.

Dos Santos was recently asked if he could pinpoint what his problem was in the match-up, and, rather than profess to be at his best, ?Cigano? stated he had a few issues during the bout?s build including some matters in his life outside of the Octagon he wasn?t willing to detail.

?Really it was my head,? said Dos Santos of the lackluster showing in a conversation with Brazilian outlet Nagradedo MMA. ?I had some personal things going on (and) a bit of my attention was lacking because of it.?

?And another thing. Soon after the fight I went to the hospital and had a scan, which showed my creatine level was too high. The normal level is up to 300, mine was in 1400. I also had trouble in the urine and kidneys,? he continued. ?The explanation of the doctors is that I pushed over the line, I over trained, and problems could have happened even before the fight? I was so good that I ended up crossing the line. That was the explanation of doctors. Mine is that I was not good with my head, was having personal problems and did not go well mentally in the fight.?

The heavy-handed striker?s loss to Velasquez was Dos Santos? first since signing with the UFC and snapped a ten-fight winning streak. On the bright side, it was also a learning experience for the 28-year old who concluded, ?Going forward I will be more careful, it will take my body to the limit all the time. I need to know how my body is reacting to what I am doing. We need to be a bit more professional about it. I will do tests during preparation. This fight also taught me that we have to be stronger with the head, think things strategy and better monitor the tactical part.?

"Six months," the fourth-year coach said Saturday during his first news conference since the 2011-12 regular-season finale last April.

After last summer's free-agent signings, beginning July 1, and the first cancellation of NHL games in October that led to a four-month lockout, Sacco waited for the day to talk publicly about his excitement over the maturing, young Avalanche team.

That time finally arrived Friday, when a smiling Sacco walked to the podium in a Family Sports Center conference room, while his team could be seen informally practicing on the neighboring ice sheet.

"For me and the players, it's nice to get back to

doing what we're accustomed to doing. It's been a long time," Sacco said.

The Avs are back and tentatively set to begin training camp Sunday if the ratification of the new collective bargaining agreement is completed Saturday, with all 30 teams opening 2013 next Saturday. Sacco and other NHL officials are confident that a 48-game regular-season schedule and opening-night opponents will be announced Sunday.

"The mood and the spirit ? I've talked to just about every guy that's back now ? and they're all very excited," Sacco said. "They all seem to have a lot of enthusiasm. The spirit is very high in (the locker room), and just peeking in and watching the scrimmages the other day, their own personal workouts, there's some good jump, some good pace in their steps. It's exciting for everybody. It's certainly been a long time coming."

The Avs' camp will have 26 players, including six who have been called up after spending the first part of the season with the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League ? forwards Mark Olver, Mike Sgarbossa, Patrick Bordeleau and David van der Gulik; and defensemen Tyson Barrie and Stefan Elliott.

The players participated in a fourth consecutive informal "captain's practice" (minus coaches) Friday. Goalie Semyon Varlamov, who returned from Russia on Wednesday, was on the ice with the group for the first time.

Sacco said he was excited about newcomers P.A. Parenteau and Greg Zanon, in addition to the maturity of young stars Varlamov, Erik Johnson, Matt Duchene and captain Gabriel Landeskog. Sacco said Parenteau undoubtedly will be used as "a top-six forward" and Zanon as a trusted veteran "defensive defenseman."

The Avs finished 41-35-6 last season (88 points), seven points out of a playoff spot after winning just two of their final seven games. They were in the playoff picture until the final two weeks.

"We had a good little run last year, but we've got to be a playoff team, and there's only 48 (regular-season) games," Avalanche defenseman Shane O'Brien said. "We've got to get it going Jan. 19 and take it from there. There's no reason we shouldn't be a top-eight team in the Western Conference, and that's what we're going for."

Landeskog, a second-year, 20-year-old power forward, replaced veteran Milan Hejduk as captain last summer.

"I feel like when we get some system's skates in this next week, I'm positive ? I'm really optimistic about this group," Landeskog said. "We're a young group, but we're a year older than last year, and we all know how it felt to miss the playoffs a year ago."

Sacco said the team's style of pressuring the puck in all three zones and using its speed won't change. "We have to cover a lot of things in a short amount of time, but probably more important than that is the conditioning aspect of it, trying to make sure when the puck drops in the first game, we are ready to play at a high pace and high level," he said.

Fourth-year forward Ryan O'Reilly, last season's leading scorer, remains unsigned and is playing in Russia. His agent, Mark Guy, resumed negotiations with the Avalanche on Tuesday, and a possible new contract for the popular forward won't be announced until after the CBA ratification process.

"He is not available, and that's a situation that will be with Greg Sherman, our general manager, and Ryan's representatives," Sacco said. "I think you all know how I feel about Ryan. He's a good teammate. He's a good player. ... From a coaching standpoint, we have 26 players here in camp, so it's not much different than when you have a guy injured. My focus is on the 26 guys that I have available."
