Seventeen dead as Syrians stage mass protests (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? Syrian security forces opened fire at protesters on Friday, killing at least 12, as hundreds of thousands filled the streets of restive cities to demonstrate against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, opposition activists said.

Five members of the security forces were also killed in a shooting in the city of Homs, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Assad, 46, has signed up to an Arab League plan for a verifiable withdrawal of his heavy weaponry and army from cities, where more than 5,000 people have been killed since March - many shot during peaceful anti-government protests but also many killed in rebel attacks and local defense actions.

But the presence of Arab League monitors in hotspots across Syria since Monday has, if anything, energized the protesters.

Demonstrators determined to show the strength of their movement to the monitors on Friday threw rocks at security forces in the Damascus suburb of Douma, where troops tear-gassed the chanting crowds.

Five people were shot dead in the city of Hama and five in the city of Deraa in the south as crowds braved army and police.

"We are determined to show them (the monitors) we exist. Whether or not there's bloodshed is not important," an activist named Abu Khaled said by telephone from the northern city of Idlib, one of the epicenters of nine months of unrest.

Most foreign media are banned from Syria and witness reports are hard to verify.

An opposition supporter named Manhal said thousands had tried to reach the main square to start a sit-in, but failed "because the security forces are firing a lot of tear gas and a few rounds of live fire."

"People hoped the presence of monitors will prevent fierce attacks. I believe we have partial protection, I don't think they would use live fire on us in front of the monitors."

The Observatory reported the deaths in Hama and Deraa. It said security forces had shot dead two people and wounded 37 in Idlib province. At least two dozen were also injured in the Damascus suburb of Douma, activists said.

VIDEO

Amateur video from Idlib showed monitors in white baseball caps and yellow safety vests wading through a sea of protesters.

Some rushed at the observers, trying to shout a few words over the thousands chanting "The people want to liberate the country!."

Protesters flooded the alleyways and streets of many protest centers, clapping and shouting "Peaceful, Peaceful" and "The people want you executed, Bashar!."

Some held up banners with the names of those shot dead in protests: "We will not forget your spilled blood," they read.

In parts of Hama, videos showed protesters fleeing the main streets as heavy gunfire erupted in the background. In one such segment, a few men rushed back, ducking in the crackle of gunfire, to carry away a man who had fallen limp in the street.

In the Damascus suburb of Douma, protesters bore away a man whose leg had been shredded by what they said were "nail bombs."

Activists in Idlib said the army had concealed its tanks in buildings on the outskirts or in dugouts.

WITHDRAWAL OF FORCES

The Arab League mission has met with strong skepticism from the outset - over its makeup, its small numbers, its reliance on Syrian government logistics, and an initial assessment by its Sudanese chief that the situation was "reassuring."

That comment was met with disbelief in the West on Wednesday but on Friday Syria's ally Russia accepted the judgment.

"Judging by the public statements made by the chief of the mission (Sudanese general Mohammed) al-Dabi, who in the first of his visits went to the city of Homs ... the situation seems to be reassuring," Russia's Foreign Ministry said on its website.

However on Friday al-Dabi, whom some link to war crimes in Darfur in the 1990s, said the reports of his comments were "unfounded and not true," a mission statement said. It said all future statements would be in writing.

Activist video from Homs over the months has depicted a trail of death and destruction sown by the military.

"Unfortunately, reports show that the violence has continued in Syria over the past few days," said Britain's Foreign Office minister for the Middle East and North Africa, Alistair Burt.

"I urge the Syrian government to meet fully its obligations to the Arab League, including immediately ending the repression and withdrawing security forces from cities."

In Brussels, a spokesperson for European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the EU "urges Syria to comply with the action plan of the Arab league in all its components" including "an immediate end of violence, the release of political prisoners (and) pulling the military out of cities."

PARTNER FOR PEACE?

The monitoring teams have encountered a range of problems, from hostility when they turn up under army escort to random gunfire, shouting mobs and communications breakdowns.

An Arab League member from a Gulf State played down expectations for the mission, which has no peacekeeping mandate.

Even if its report turned out to be negative, it would not "act as a bridge to foreign intervention" but simply indicate that "the Syrian government has not implemented the Arab initiative," the delegate told Reuters.

The commander of the anti-government Free Syrian Army told Reuters its fighters had been ordered to stop offensive operations pending a meeting with Arab League delegates.

"All operations against the regime are to be stopped except in a situation of self defense," Colonel Riad al-Asaad said. "We have tried to communicate with them and we requested a meeting with the team. So far there hasn't been any success."

Just how widely the Turkey-based commander's order will be heeded by anti-government gunmen inside Syria is in question. A video shot by rebels this week showed the ambush of a convoy of army buses in which, activists said, four soldiers were killed.

The FSA, formed by thousands of defectors from Assad's army and financed by expatriate Syrians, has taken the offensive in the past three months, taking the fight to the state rather than simply trying to defend opposition strongholds.

Its decisions are potentially crucial to any peace plan.

Syria says it is fighting Islamist militants steered from abroad who have killed more than 2,000 of its troops. Activists do not dispute a significant toll among the security forces.

(AP) ? Venezuela is offering free surgeries for women to remove faulty French-made breast implants, the country's top health official said.

Health Minister Eugenia Sader said women with implants made by the now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese may go to hospitals that carry out plastic surgery to have the implants removed, the state-run Venezuelan News Agency reported.

Sader said Tuesday that the free procedure will simply be to remove the implants and will not include replacing them.

"Those patients are running a risk," Sader said. However, she said, women need not seek emergency care and instead may visit hospitals at their convenience.

France's health system has recommended that women with the PIP implants get them replaced, and has agreed to pay for surgeries. In Brazil and Argentina, however, health officials just recommend checkups.

The president of Brazil's Plastic Surgeons Association, Jose Horacio Aboudib, said "I'd remove them from any patient that wants to, but I don't see the need for everyone to go into surgery."

"In France, the government pays for the surgery. Here it is not considered a public health risk, and so the patient would have to pay for it," Aboudib said, noting that his association will create a breast implant registry in January, so that doctors can register information on surgeries and the implant material used in a database aimed at improving patient safety and care.

On Tuesday, a group of 50 women in Argentina threatened to sue their plastic surgeons if they don't get free replacements of the faulty French breast implants.

The group is led by attorney Virginia Luna, who herself has the "PIP" silicone gel packs implanted in her breasts. She said five of her clients have obtained out-of-court agreements to provide free replacements, and if the rest don't get them as well, her group will sue.

Argentine clinics say they'll replace leaky implants, but the symptoms aren't always detectable, and Luna says any woman with the faulty implants can suffer psychological damage.

It's unclear how many women have the PIP implants in Venezuela, where breast enlargement surgery is popular and doctors say the French implants used to be widely used.

An estimated 35,000 to 40,000 women in the country have breast enlargement surgery each year, said Dr. Marisol Graterol, president of the Venezuelan Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has criticized the widespread popularity of breast surgery, saying women shouldn't be sold on an image that big bosoms are attractive.

The plastic surgery society recommended last week that women with PIP breast implants see a doctor to have them checked. Graterol said doctors should decide depending on each patient's situation whether or not the implants need to be removed.

Sales of PIP implants were halted in Venezuela in April 2010, Graterol said.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Henry Saud said he removed ruptured PIP implants from more than 10 patients during the past year.

In some cases, his patients hadn't noticed anything wrong and the leaking implants were detected during imaging exams, Saud said. In other cases, "they felt discomfort and had swelling."

"It used to be one of the most-used brands," Saud said.

Romney, sensing opening, makes big push in Iowa (AP)

CLINTON, Iowa ? Mitt Romney has stepped into the center of a perfect storm in Iowa ? and he's going all in.

Sensing an opening to win next Tuesday's caucuses, an ever-more confident Romney is campaigning hard in a region of the state where he performed well in his failed 2008 race, with a bus tour and new crush of advertising intended to bolster his closing argument: that he's the most electable candidate against President Barack Obama.

It's thanks to a combination of luck and planning that Romney now finds himself in strong contention for an Iowa caucus victory that would give him a boost heading into the next contest, in New Hampshire, where the former Massachusetts governor's standing is strong.

Not that he's publicly entertaining the notion of back-to-back victories.

"I can't possibly allow myself to think in such optimistic terms. I just have to put my head down and battle as best I can," Romney said Wednesday. "But I can tell you: If the people here in Clinton are any example, or any indication, of what's going to happen in the process, I feel pretty good."

In a sign of his growing confidence, Romney hasn't announced where he'll be on caucus night and has left open the possibility that he may stay in Iowa if victory is at hand. Advisers are redoubling efforts to try to capitalize on the slide in support for Newt Gingrich and skepticism of Ron Paul by making a concerted effort to increase turnout in areas where Romney did well four years ago. His campaign also added at least $100,000 in additional advertising for the final days ? and bought broadcast advertising for the first time in the Quad Cities market in eastern Iowa.

And, while Romney is largely shying away from criticizing his rivals, he jabbed at Paul, who has emerged as his chief rival in Iowa, on Wednesday ? another indication of Romney's efforts to triumph here.

"One of the people running for president thinks it's OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon," Romney said in Muscatine in response to a question from the audience. "I don't."

This is a far more aggressive strategy than the one Romney has employed all year after pouring $10 million into the state in 2008 only to lose it in a defeat that crippled his entire campaign. He couldn't allay concerns about his Mormon faith or his reversals on some social issues in a state where evangelical Republicans and other social conservatives dominate.

Romney approached Iowa more cautiously for this race, so much so that until recently aides worked out of an attic in Des Moines on a shoestring budget. He also had spent less than $200,000 on the state before the campaign started buying TV ads in December.

But even as advisers worked to play down expectations, they quietly stayed in contact with backers from his first campaign ? and Romney stood at the ready to try to take advantage of an opportunity in the race, should one present itself.

It looks like it has.

Social conservatives that united behind former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in 2008 remain splintered among a handful of candidates that include Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. Gingrich, the former House speaker, was Romney's latest threat but he's taken a significant beating from an onslaught of advertisements by a super PAC run by Romney's allies. Paul, a libertarian-leaning Republican, is a serious contender in Iowa but he has foreign policy views so outside the Republican mainstream that most Republicans believe he has little chance to win the GOP nomination.

On Wednesday, a new CNN/TIME poll in Iowa showed Romney leading with 25 percent support. Paul had 22 percent and Santorum drew 16 percent while Gingrich had fallen to 14 percent.

So Romney is trying to seize the moment. And it may be working.

Overflow crowds have been greeting Romney at every stop of his three-day, seven-city tour on a bus plastered with his campaign logo and "Conservative, Businessman, Leader" slogan on the side.

So many people showed up at a deli in Clinton that Romney's staff also sent the candidate to visit the restaurant across the street. Before sunrise, the line to see Romney at Elly's Coffee and Tea in Muscatine stretched out the door and down the block.

On Tuesday night, the campaign said that only 150 people had RSVPed to attend Romney's speech in Davenport. But more than 500 people showed up, shutting at least 200 people out of the Blackhawk Hotel ballroom. Many area voters were notified only that morning of Romney's visit.

People seem to like what they hear.

"He's probably the best chance to beat Obama," said Carol Hetzler, a medical secretary who backed Sen. John McCain's in 2008. She had also considered voting for Gingrich.

And Tim McCleary, who was waiting in line at Elly's before 7 a.m. to see Romney, said: "The only reason I'm supporting Romney is because he can win the election."

As Romney visits small towns in eastern Iowa, he's also doing countless interviews with the local media. He spent most of Wednesday morning talking to radio stations and small Iowa newspapers.

He's also relying on friends to help him make the sale.

Romney was dispatching surrogates from nearby states, including South Dakota Sen. John Thune, former Sens. Norm Coleman of Minnesota and Jim Talent of Missouri, to campaign in Iowa. Former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole was dialing influential activists Tuesday, including former state GOP chairman Steve Grubbs, who is a well-connected campaign operative in Davenport in the heart of Romney's eastern Iowa base.

"He made the argument that the candidate who has shown the ability to win by the effectiveness of the campaign he's run is Mitt Romney," said Grubbs, who worked on Dole's 1996 campaign. "At the end of the day, he was selling electability."

It's the case Romney will try to make in North Liberty, Waterloo and Ames on Thursday and in Des Moines on Friday.

Mindful not to ignore New Hampshire altogether, Romney planned events there Friday and Saturday. Four of his five sons will campaign in the state Thursday before heading to Iowa this weekend. His wife, Ann, will remain in Iowa all weekend, campaigning in the western part of the state. Romney returns to Iowa later Saturday.

Aide to top Mexican drug boss Guzman captured (Reuters)

MEXICO CITY, Dec 26 (Reuters) ? Mexico landed its third blow against the country's most wanted drug trafficker in as many months after capturing a suspected lieutenant of Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, boss of the powerful Sinaloa cartel.

On Monday, masked Mexican soldiers presented Felipe Cabrera, known as "el Inge," to the media following his capture in Culiacan, capital of Sinaloa, the northwestern Pacific state after which the drug cartel is named.

Cabrera, whose nickname is an abbreviation of the Spanish word for engineer, was the second suspected Guzman lieutenant to be seized there in the past two months.

"These are blows to the (Sinaloa) organization, but the structure for drug trafficking and money laundering is still intact," Alberto Islas, a security expert at consultancy Risk Evaluation, said after Cabrera's media parade in Mexico City.

In what may have been another bitter pill for Guzman, the government said later that the navy had seized 21 tonnes of monomethylamine - a compound used to make methamphetamines - in the Pacific port of Manzanillo, traditionally his turf.

The shipment may have been intended for Guzman given that several others belonging to him had been seized there, one official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Islas said the haul, which was intercepted on its way from Peru to Guatemala - where the Sinaloa cartel is also active - was probably worth at least $50 million in unprocessed form.

CRACKDOWN

President Felipe Calderon's conservative administration has been dominated by a military crackdown on drug cartels, which has claimed over 45,000 lives in the past five years, eroding support for his National Action Party, or PAN.

The PAN has been trailing its main rival for months as Mexico gears up for a presidential election in July 2012.

The government has captured or killed dozens of top smugglers, but Guzman, the most notorious, is still at large.

Defense ministry spokesman Ricardo Trevilla hailed the arrest of Cabrera as a setback for the operational and leadership capabilities of the Sinaloa cartel, regarded as the main trafficker of drugs into the United States.

The ministry said Cabrera was in charge of the cartel's operations in Durango, a state bordering Sinaloa and a Guzman bastion where the kingpin has been rumored to live.

Guzman runs an empire of methamphetamine, marijuana and cocaine smuggling that has earned him a spot on Forbes magazine's list of billionaires.

The ministry added that Cabrera also had responsibility for the southern part of the border state of Chihuahua, through which many drugs are smuggled into the United States.

Cabrera, who allegedly headed Guzman's personal security in the Durango area, is suspected of involvement in a host of violent crimes ranging from arson to kidnapping and extortion.

He was captured on Friday as part of an operation which led to the arrest of 23 suspected operators in the Sinaloa cartel and their bitter rivals, Los Zetas.

Box Office Guru Wrapup: Cruise Claims #1 Spot at Christmas

Scoring his first number one film in a lead role since his last turn as Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise scaled to the top of the charts over a sluggish Christmas session with his latest spy sequel Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol which topped the North American box office in its first round of wide release. The top three spots were all sophomore sequels playing musical chairs from last week's rankings as the batch of new holiday releases were met with more modest turn-outs settling for slots in the middle of the top ten. Overall sales were disturbingly slow but studios are hoping that the week ahead will see heavy traffic at multiplexes thanks to the extra time off so many people will have. Monday is a national day off and should see a strong spike in activity for all films.

Christmas Eve is always a soft moviegoing day due to last-minute holiday distractions and theaters closing early so with it falling on the prime day of Saturday this year, weekend grosses took a beating for every movie. But what was alarming was that total ticket sales even dipped below grosses from 2005 when the calendar was the exact same even though ticket prices were lower back then and there were no 3D surcharges added to the mix.

Expanding nationwide after five days of exclusive play on large-format screens, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol was the top film among moviegoers over Santa weekend grossing an estimated $26.5M over the Friday-to-Sunday period. The fourth installment in the long-running Paramount series averaged $7,696 from 3,448 theaters which was good given the hit all films took on Christmas Eve. Adding in the earlier limited run in IMAX and other large-format venues, the cume stands at a solid $59M with a red hot holiday week still to come when everyday behaves like a Saturday. Ghost Protocol will easily beat the $134M domestic final of the last film, 2006's Mission: Impossible III, and although it is too early to conclude, it also has a shot at challenging the $215.4M of 2000's MI2 to become the top-grossing installment of the series. After the disappointing results five years ago of the last flick, and all the negative publicity Cruise attracted in recent years, most thought this franchise could not make a comeback like this.

Dropping 55% in its second weekend to second place was the tentpole sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows with an estimated $17.8M raising the ten-day tally to $76.6M. Even factoring out the Christmas Eve effect, it was a large decline for a pricey pic coming off of a softer-than-expected opening. All the new choices for grown-ups certainly affected the turn out and teens are not contributing significantly to the grosses. Shadows currently is running 45% behind the pace of the first Sherlock although that film had a much stronger playing period in its first ten days since it debuted on Christmas Day.

Fellow sophomore sequel Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked fared better dropping 43% from its opening frame to an estimated $13.3M ranking third for the session. The Fox release has taken in $50.3M in ten days and is running 40% behind the first Alvin from 2007 which had a very similar pre-Christmas calender. With kids now out of school and on break, the studio is expecting stellar daily grosses for the next week.

Sony's much-hyped The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opened in fourth place with a mediocre start grossing an estimated $13M over the Friday-to-Sunday weekend and $21.4M since debuting on Tuesday night. Directed by David Fincher, the R-rated remake of the hit Swedish film averaged only $4,461 from 2,914 locations and like other films is hoping to pick up solid numbers during the holiday week ahead. The studio projected a very aggressive 133% Saturday-to-Sunday jump while other major adult-skewing films estimated 50-80% boosts. Reviews were quite good and the Daniel Craig starrer has even scored some notices during awards season, however the dark and violent subject matter coupled with intense competition for the attention of mature adults led to an underwhelming result over the happy and cheery yuletide holiday. Still, a domestic final of $100M cannot be ruled out this early in the run.

Steven Spielberg had a bumpy start to his Christmas double feature offering for North American movie fans. The animated actioner The Adventures of Tintin bowed to just $9.1M this weekend, according to estimates, with $13.9M across the five-day debut period of Wednesday-to-Sunday. The domestic total including the earlier run in Quebec which began on December 9 is $17.1M. The 3D Paramount release played in 3,087 theaters and averaged a weak $2,956 but with sensational reviews is hoping to find American audiences over time. The property is not too well-known in the United States which always posed a challenge. Tintin opened in Europe and most international territories in October and has banked a stellar $240M+ overseas already making the U.S. not too important to the overall picture. Other films generated more excitement with parents and kids have been turning up in bigger numbers for the more familiar Alvin and the Chipmunks pic even though it is in its second weekend.

Also slow out of the gate, but well-positioned to gain some ground during the holiday week ahead, was the Matt Damon drama We Bought a Zoo which opened on Friday and collected an estimated $7.8M over the weekend from 3,117 locations for a dull $2,502 average. The PG-rated film was not based on any brand that would lead to upfront excitement and Damon is not much of a box office draw outside of the action genre so Fox has been counting on positive buzz from regular moviegoers to help it sell the film. Two rounds of sneak previews weeks ago and the two days of nationwide release before Christmas Day were intended to get the feel-good film in front of ordinary people who would then spread strong word-of-mouth over the holidays allowing those recommendations to kick in from December 25 onwards. An encouraging A grade from CinemaScore indicates that the product is indeed pleasing ticket buyers so Zoo numbers will have to be watched in the days and weeks ahead. Reviews have been mixed and won't help the cause too much, but working in the film's favor is that it is the only truly American film for grown-ups among all the major films this holiday week. Other films feature some combination of foreign settings, charcters, and actors.

Holdovers with modest grosses rounded out the top ten. The Warner Bros. comedy New Year's Eve tumbled 59% to an estimated $3M giving the ensemble pic a disappointing $32.3M to date. With its namesake holiday having arrived, the 3D toon Arthur Christmas dipped only 24% to an estimated $2.7M for a lackluster $44.2M cume to date. Audiences are notorious for losing interest in Santa-themed films from December 26 onwards. Disney's The Muppets followed with an estimated $2M, down 43%, for a $75.6M sum. Off 43% was another PG-rated Thanksgiving leftover, Martin Scorsese's acclaimed 3D drama Hugo, which also collected an estimated $2M giving Paramount a not-too-impressive $43.7M to date.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $97.3M which was down 22% from last year when Little Fockers opened in the top spot with $30.8M; and down a steep 62% from 2009's record frame when Avatar stayed at number one with $75.6M.

Microsoft to bid CES goodbye after 2012 event

CBR Staff Writer Published 23 December 2011

Microsoft cited its product milestones lack of alignment with the show's January timing

Microsoft's presence at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2012 will be its swan song at this event.

CES, one of the largest trade shows in the world, is slated be held be held during January 9-12 in Las Vegas.

Microsoft's earlier CEO and founder Bill Gates delivered keynote speeches at the show for 11 years consecutively. Current CEO Steve Ballmer has been delivering the speech for the past three shows and he will present his last next month.

Microsoft said it will continue to use CES as a place to connect to customers, but it will not set up a booth, citing its product milestones lack of alignment with the show's January timing.

Microsoft's corporate communications head Frank Shaw in a blog post said they have decided that this coming January will be their last keynote presentation and booth at CES.

"We won't have a keynote or booth after this year because our product news milestones generally don't align with the show's January timing," said Shaw.

Earlier in late 2008, its arch rival Apple also decided that it would stop participating at expositions after the January 2009 Macworld Conference & Expo.

Santa Claus arrives in Canada

There were plenty of sightings of Santa Claus in the skies above Canada and the United States overnight, with his reindeer-powered sleigh loaded with gifts for boys and girls.

NORAD confirmed Santa took off from the North Pole around 6 a.m. ET on Saturday with Rudolph's red nose guiding the way. Previously reported sightings of the gift-laden sleigh were apparently test runs, a requirement to warm up the reindeer for their epic global trek.

Satellite images available on NORAD's website show Santa's minute-by-minute progress. By about 8 p.m. ET he had touched down in South America, Europe, Russia, the Far East, a number of small islands in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, New Zealand and Australia, the Middle East, South Asia and Africa.

"He's making good progress around the world," Lt.-Gen. Thomas Lawson, the Canadian deputy commander of NORAD, told CBC News.

Santa reached the shores of North America at about 10 p.m. ET, on the final leg of his journey around the world. He was seen first in Charlottetown, before moving into the rest of Atlantic Canada and then inland. He was also spotted in dozens of communities south of the border.

By midnight he had delivered around 1.7 billion gifts to the good boys and girls of the world.

On the NORAD Tracks Santa website, children can see a map of where Santa has dropped off presents and watch videos of his flight.

The website explains that the military organization, responsible for aerospace and maritime defence in Canada and the U.S., tracks Santa with a combination of radar, satellites, cameras and fighter jets.

That detection is made much easier thanks to Rudolph's bright, red nose which emits an infrared signature, Lawson said.

The latest information available from NORAD said Santa appeared to be in good spirits and his reindeer are doing fine.

"We don't know exactly his flight plan, but best be in bed when he does come," Lawson said.

The History of the Republican Iowa Caucus (ContributorNetwork)

The Iowa Republican Caucus is supposed to set the tone for the entire primary season since it is the first contest of the race. Since Iowa isn't a swing state in the general election, it might be puzzling that it has such an important early role in deciding the nominations. But since 1972, Iowa has solidified its position as a kingmaker for presidential candidates.

* Iowa has nearly 1800 precincts, each of which hold meetings to pick delegates for county conventions.

* After these caucuses, those chosen to be county convention delegates then choose delegates for the district convention, who then choose state convention delegates, who then choose delegates to represent Iowa at the Democratic and Republican national conventions. There, they officially pledge their support to the candidates favored in the Iowa caucuses.

* In the late 1960s, according to Slate, the Iowa Democratic Party ruled at least 30 days had to pass between the caucus and district conventions, as well as between the district and state conventions. As such, the latest the 1972 Democratic caucus could be held was on Jan. 24, which made it the first contest of the presidential election season and jumped it over the New Hampshire primary.

* Democrats first proved the power of early Iowa caucus after George McGovern campaigned hard, finished second and got enough of a boost to propel him to the nomination. Jimmy Carter then used a win in Iowa to become the Democratic nominee in 1976 -- the same year Republicans moved their caucus to early January as well, according to the Iowa GOP.

* Unlike Democrats, Republicans take a straw poll to see which candidate the delegates favor in the precinct caucuses, according to the Iowa GOP.

* The first major Republican battle in Iowa came in 1980 as George H.W. Bush won a straw poll over Ronald Reagan but couldn't hold him off for the nomination.

* After Bush, the only Republicans to win the Iowa caucus and not the nomination were Bob Dole in 1988 and Mike Huckabee in 2008, according to the Des Moines Register.

* Iowa holds a caucus instead of a primary because it is a smaller state. Yet as it is the first contest of election season, candidates spend months campaigning to get an edge.

* No Republican candidate who has finished below the top three has gone on to win the nomination, according to How Stuff Works.

* In July, the Des Moines Register reported half of likely Republican caucus goers have a college degree, with over 40 percent claiming to be "born-again," over 50 percent being male, over 90 percent being white and about 40 percent having an average salary of over $70,000 a year.

* Iowa moved the 2012 caucus from Feb. 6 to Jan. 3 after Florida moved its primary to Jan. 31, according to the Iowa caucus website.

Iran demands Afghanistan block US drone flights (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran's foreign minister demanded Thursday that Afghanistan stop allowing the U.S. to use bases in the country to launch drone flights over Iran, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Iran has displayed a pilotless American aircraft it says was forced to land two weeks ago during a mission over Iran. The U.S. says it went down because of a malfunction.

"We have demanded the government of Afghanistan study the case seriously and not allow such an incident to happen anymore, otherwise it will be seen as an unfriendly act," Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said, according to the report.

He also urged all of Iran's neighbors not to allow the United States to "misuse" their lands and airspace.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Wednesday that the U.S. will continue the operations.

Speaking at a news conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Panetta said the operations were part of U.S. efforts to defend both Afghanistan and the U.S. homeland and involve "important intelligence operations which we will continue to pursue."

Karzai, meanwhile, said Afghanistan doesn't want to be involved in any "adversarial relations" between the U.S. and Iran.

Earlier this week, Iran summoned an Afghan envoy to protest the violation of its airspace by the U.S. surveillance drone.

Iran has said the unmanned aircraft was detected over the eastern town of Kashmar, some 140 miles (225 kilometers) from the border with Afghanistan.

The RQ-170 Sentinel drone was lost over Iran two weeks ago. Iranian state television broadcast video of Iranians inspecting the aircraft, which was largely intact.

Iran has called the operation an "invasion and hostile act" and rejected a U.S. demand for returning the drone.

Moody's downgrades Belgium's debt by 2 notches (AP)

NEW YORK ? Moody's Investors Services on Friday downgraded Belgium's credit rating by two notches, citing strains on eurozone countries as they try to finance their heavy debt loads amid the regional financial crisis.

The ratings agency cut Belgium's local- and foreign-currency government bond ratings to "Aa3" from Aa1," with a negative outlook. The ratings remain investment grade.

Moody's said the downgrade comes as soaring borrowing costs strain the finances of heavily indebted countries that use the euro, like Belgium. The strains are also making it difficult for Belgium to reduce debt and rein in spending.

Other factors included the impact the crisis is having on Belgium's economic growth, and concerns about the small nation's banking sector.

Moody's earlier this week said the debt of the euro area countries is under pressure, because of the uncertainty surrounding efforts to solve the region's debt crisis. The agency has said it is reviewing its ratings on France's debt, and downgraded Hungary late last month. It already rates the bonds of Greece, Ireland and Portugal as "junk."

It downgrading Belgium, Moody's said higher costs for financing public borrowing could "significantly complicate" efforts to reduce the country's overall level of debt. In addition, there is an increased probability ? although it is still low ? that further turmoil could result in the inability to sell bonds.

The ratings agency is also concerned about the ability for the "small and very open Belgian economy" to grow, particularly as the rest of Europe aims to reduce debt by putting strict austerity measures into place. Belgium may find it necessary to further cut spending beyond the roughly euro11 billion to euro16 billion cuts planned, which would further weigh on economic growth.

Moody's pointed to Belgium's recent political trouble as another concern in addressing its economic problems.

Elio Di Rupo took the oath as Belgium's prime minister on Dec. 6, ending 541 days under a caretaker government that resulted from impasse among negotiators trying to bridge the divide between the country's linguistic groups.

"Belgium's recent experience of political bargaining indicates that consensus on additional measures can be difficult to achieve," Moody's said.

Finally, Moody's raised the issue of Belgium's banking sector. The ratings agency is concerned that the continued dismantling of Dexia Credit Local could further increase debt. In October, the Dexia Bank Belgium unit was nationalized at a cost of euro4 billion. That move increased Belgium's exposure to the rest of the banking group. Combined, Moody's estimated that exposure to be close to 10 percent of the nation's gross domestic product.

Earlier Friday, Fitch Ratings said it was considering further cuts to the credit scores of Belgium and five other eurozone nations.

Analysis: Another tumultuous year looms, but don't panic (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? The looming new year may well bring as much financial turbulence as tumultuous 2011 but global investors reckon "panic" is no longer an option and just protecting your money will require taking on at least some risk.

For all this year's left-field shocks -- the euro sovereign debt and banking minefield, an unprecedented U.S. credit rating warning, Japan's earthquake, the Arab Spring uprisings -- investors have not gone to ground in quite the same way they did at the height of the credit implosion in 2007 and 2008.

That's not to say extreme "risk off" valuations that have seen top-rated government debt yields drop below equity dividend yields have not persisted and grown, even as sovereign bonds were deemed riskier and the AAA status of the United States and Germany have been threatened by credit-rating firms.

Rather this pricing has happened without the same sort of panicked market dislocation that saw a wholesale retreat from investable assets and dash for cash three years ago.

"It is frightening that these valuations can be reached in a cold and calculated manner. We have seen none of the previous panics, nor the correlations of almost all liquid and tradable assets in a scramble for cash," said Jim Wood-Smith, head of research at British wealth management firm Williams de Broe.

This shows investors need to remain invested even though nervous of macro-driven index volatility and the prospect of real losses in cash or sovereign debt over a protracted period.

It's one thing descending into the bunker to see out an air raid, it's quite another to live down there for a decade.

NO REFUGE IN MONEY FUNDS

For all the stress, volatility and gloom, investors actually pulled more than $150 billion from cash-like money market funds in 2011, according to fund-tracker EPFR. Back in 2008, almost half a trillion dollars flooded to these funds but cumulative losses since early 2009 still stand at more than a trillion.

There are two main reasons why hunkering down in "safety" is no longer an option.

One is that most traditional havens are now almost certain to lose you money in real terms over time as inflation-adjusted yields on 10-year U.S., German and Britain government bonds -- not to mention money market funds or short-term savings accounts -- are all now deeply negative.

The second is the toxic mix of slow western growth, sovereign stress and high market volatility is not going to go away in a hurry and could well define the rest of the decade.

"We do not believe that interest rates will 'normalize' for years, possibly running into decades," said Wood-Smith at Williams de Broe.

As Standard Life Investments' Rod Paris told Reuters last week: "It's easy to be very risk averse and not deal with anyone or anything, but we have a business to run."

Even the optimists -- who still see double digit global equity gains next year -- acknowledge it will at least be bumpy.

There are ways to look at the euro zone's slow-motion crisis resolution as a glass half-full. It may be the start of a historic fiscal union that bequeaths a stronger, better-functioning currency area.

Yet with the price for austerity being paid in growth and France, Italy and Spain together needing to raise up to 17 billion euros of new debt on average every week in 2012, there's clearly scope for accidents along the way.

Growth may be better in the United States, but a presidential election year brings its own stasis and longer-term control of the country's debt mountain remains unresolved. The emerging engines of China and the developing world are cooling fast and markets there have underperformed badly this year.

For the pessimists, of course, everything remains bleak.

Deutsche Bank credit strategists told clients on Monday that much of their 2012 outlook could be directly copied from last year's, hooked on fear of debt restructuring, default, haircuts, and the choice between fiscal euro union or extreme levels of money printing. "The one difference is that the stakes have become far higher 12 months on."

And so volatility, it would seem, remains the name of the game as fundamental valuations vie with "event risks" and recession risks spar with more government intervention. Stock market volatility captured by Wall Street's VIX index (.VIX) may not be near 2008 extremes, but it is remaining elevated for longer.

A poll of investors conducted by the Association of Investment Companies this week showed 96 percent expect another volatile year in 2012. However, 71 percent think that markets will ultimately go up.

When asked what gave them the greatest cause for optimism, 26 percent of managers are encouraged by strong company balance sheets. A further 26 percent believe equities still represent good value.

In a world where years of sovereign stress and negative real yields lie ahead, high-dividend blue chip stocks or high-grade corporate debt - ideally of companies with hefty emerging market exposure -- remain many money managers' investments of choice.

Williams de Broe point out that despite high correlation of top stocks and the dominance of index-tracking and use of exchange-traded funds, the past 10 years was not so much a "lost decade" for equity if stocks were carefully selected.

Even though the FTSE 100 (.FTSE) has lost more than 20 percent December 1999, more than 33 current FTSE stocks -- including blue chips such as Unilever (ULVR.L) and Tesco (TSCO.L) -- at least doubled over the same period.

"In order for portfolios to provide returns that are more than paltry, investors must take on greater risk at a time when the volatility of equity markets is highly likely to become ever greater," said Wood-Smith.

Hands-on with the Motorola XYBOARD 10.1

Motorola XYBOARD 10.1

This Motorola XYBOARD 10.1 looks a little familiar, eh? It should. Take the Motorola XYBOARD 8.2 (see our hands-on), add a couple inches, and that's what you've got. It's the same redesigned Motorola Xoom 2 with a larger screen and a third option for storage -- 16GB, 32GB or 64GB.

Otherwise, pretty much the same thing here. You've got angled corners, the metallic section on the back, 5MP rear camera, microUSB and microHDMI. You've also got a 1.5GHz dual-core TI OMAP processor and 1GB of RAM running Android 3.2 Honeycomb, with an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich already promised. No microSD card, however.

Check out our quick hands-on after the break.

Another Earth? NASA confirms first planet that could support life, liquid water (Yahoo! News)

Obama greets a crowd at Wilkes Barre/Scranton International Airport (Carolyn Kaster/AP)

Republicans on a private Republican National Committee conference call with allies warned Tuesday that party surrogates should refrain from personal attacks against President Barack Obama, because such a strategy is too hazardous for the GOP.

"We're hesitant to jump on board with heavy attacks" personally against President Obama, Nicholas Thompson, the vice president of Tarrance Group, a Republican polling firm, said on the call. "There's a lot of people who feel sorry for him."

Recent polling data indicates that while the president still suffers significantly low job approval ratings, voters still give "high approval" to Obama personally, Thompson said.

Voters "don't think he's an evil man who's out to change the United States" for the worse--even though many of the same survey respondents agree that his policies have harmed the country, Thompson said. The upshot, Thompson stressed, is that Republicans should "exercise some caution" when talking about the president personally.

On the call--which Yahoo News was invited to attend because of a mistake by someone on the staff of the Republican National Committee--Ari Fleischer, the former press secretary for George W. Bush, encouraged Republicans to turn around the Democratic attacks lobbed at the GOP presidential candidates (Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, for starters) for "flip-flopping."

"I don't like playing defense," Fleischer said. He suggested the listeners to Tuesday's call label the president as a flip-flopper on the following issues: opposing tax increases for those making under $250,000; opposing the Bush tax cuts; opposing raising the debt limit; and opposing a health care mandate.

"When it comes to flip flopping, Barack Obama is the king of flip flopping," Fleischer said. "You can offer that to anybody," he suggested.

Thompson noted that Obama may be boxed in by similarly strong personal approval numbers for Republican lawmakers as he ponders attacking the GOP House majority during the 2012 campaign.

"Obama running against Congress is not going to work," Thompson said.

In a poll conducted in early November by the Tarrance Group and the Democratic group Lake Research for Politico and George Washington University, voters gave their personal member of Congress a 46 percent approval rating--even higher than the 44 percent personal approval numbers for Obama in the survey, Thompson said. (The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percent.)

Fifty-eight percent of the voters surveyed disapproved of how Obama is handling relations with Congress, according to Tarrance's November poll.

"It's a tough road for him when you look at those numbers," Thompson said of the president.

Thompson said that his group's research suggests that voters are giving Obama higher approval on foreign policy than on the issue of jobs and the economy.
