Change Management with ?Who Moved My Cheese?? | Intuit Small ...

Though it has been over a decade since Who Moved My Cheese? was published, the lessons it can teach small business about change management still hold good.

?

Dr. Spencer Johnson authored Who Moved My Cheese? in 1998, to create a generic guide on change management that would create a lasting impact. The book remained a New York Times Bestseller for five continuous years and is still considered one of the best business tools in spite of being simplistic. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in India are at the eye of the storm when it comes to changes. They face constant political, legal, economic, social, technological and even cultural changes, though they still function in familiar territory. These changes are more often than not, fast to happen.

?

For instance, most of the core business functions in the small business sector are now getting digitized. Be it accounting or marketing, companies are forced to take it online in order to outdo their competition and carry on. While a few thrive on change, many adapt slowly, reluctantly and sometimes do not adapt to the changes at all! At a time when a company?s very survival depends on its ability to not reactively adapt but proactively go after change, Who Moved My Cheese? is a resourceful read on organizational change management.

?

The book sums up the universal laws for tackling change with ?The Handwriting on the Wall,? where one of the characters writes messages as he cautiously changes his habits and thought process.

?

Change Happens

?

This literally means change is the only permanent thing, so one might as well start looking forward to it! For a small business it is important to understand this and be flexible.

?

Anticipate Change

?

Instead of waiting of a wave of change to come and hit when you least expect it; keep a keen eye out for change. Follow industry trends both locally and globally. Make sure you start innovating systems and processes that are in place.

?

Monitor Change

?

Anticipating change gives you an insight into exactly when you need to abandon the old and switch to the new. This will help you realize when your goals, way of working and communicating and your technology have become obsolete or stale.

?

Adapt to Change Quickly

?
The quicker you adapt to change and stop missing an old habit, the more effective you can get in a newer arena.

?

Change

?

Once you move on to a fresher way of doing things, you can leave any insecurities behind and have fun staying ahead of the pack. This way make you can beat the competitors and get there first.

?

Enjoy Change

?

This message urges one to enjoy the process of change and the place where you have reached now. This positivity will increase the effectiveness of you, your employees and your entire organization.

?

Be ready to change quickly and enjoy it again

?

Never get too comfortable and complacent about anything. Repeat the entire exercise, since change is permanent!

Brains may be wired for addiction

Abnormalities in the brain may make some people more likely to become drug addicts, according to scientists at the University of Cambridge.

They found the same differences in the brains of addicts and their non-addicted brothers and sisters.

The study, published in the journal Science, suggested addiction is in part a "disorder of the brain".

Other experts said the non-addicted siblings offered hope of new ways of teaching addicts "self-control".

It has long been established that the brains of drug addicts have some differences to other people, explaining that finding has been more difficult.

Experts were unsure whether drugs changed the wiring of the brain or if drug addicts' brains were wired differently in the first place.

This study attempted to answer that by comparing the brains of 50 cocaine or crack addicts with the brain of their brother or sister, who had always been clean.

Both the addicts and the non-addict siblings had the same abnormalities in the region of the brain which controls behaviour, the fronto-striatal systems.

The suggestion is that these brains may be "hard-wired" for addiction in the first place.

Lead researcher Dr Karen Ersche said: "It has long been known that not everyone who takes drugs becomes addicted."

Case Study

By David Shukman

Science Editor, BBC News

I met two of the participants in the study in Cambridge yesterday.

Sophia has the pallour and nervousness of a long-term user of cocaine and crack. Her elder sister Teresa is smartly-dressed and describes herself as a control freak.

They went through the tests and the scans and were surprised to find that they share the same abnormalities of the brain. It's a discovery that makes their contrasting lives all the more remarkable.

Sophia is receiving treatment but admits she has trouble with self-control. Theresa, with a similar biological predisposition to addiction, has found the strength of character to stay clean.

Poles apart, they are nevertheless devoted to each other and these findings bring them closer. A unique project has an unexpectedly moving outcome.

She told the BBC: "It shows that drug addiction is not a choice of lifestyle, it is a disorder of the brain and we need to recognise this."

However, the non-addicted siblings had a very different life despite sharing the same susceptibility.

"What these brothers and sisters who don't have addiction problems, what they can tell us is how they overcome these problems, how they manage self-control in their daily life," Dr Karen Ersche said.

Dr Paul Keedwell, a consultant psychiatrist at Cardiff University, said: "Addiction, like most psychiatric disorders, is the product of nature and nurture.

"We need to follow up people over time to quantify the relative risk of nature versus nurture."

It is possible that the similarities in the sibling's brains may not be down to genetics, but rather growing up in the same household. Research on the relationship between addiction and the structure of the brain is far from over.

However, many specialists believe these findings open up new avenues for treatment.

"If we could get a handle on what makes unaffected relatives of addicts so resilient we might be able to prevent a lot of addiction from taking hold," said Dr Keedwell.

The chief pharmacist for Derbyshire Mental Health Trust, David Branford, said the study, "implies that addiction does not produce noticeable changes to brain structure and function which means that there may be provision for looking at new treatment techniques for addiction".

Prof Les Iversen, from the department of pharmacology at the University of Oxford, said: "These new findings reinforce the view that the propensity to addiction is dependent on inherited differences in brain circuitry, and offer the possibility of new ways of treating high-risk individuals to develop better 'self control'."

Australian Football League Regular Season Betting

As one of the most competitive sports in the industry, the Australian Football League is getting set to kick off its 2010 regular season. Sixteen teams will compete for the premiership, with the regular season commencing in September. There are several betting options available to gamers based on statistical odds and favorites. With all of the thrilling match-ups expected to take place, there is no telling who will come out victorious.

As of right now, it appears that the Geelong Cats are the favorites to take home the crown. Certain web sites are offering decent payouts for their victory. For instance, betbrain is paying out EUR 4.15 for every EUR1 wagered. While this payout does seem enticing, the other figures clearly indicate that experts would not be shocked to see Geelong win it all during the regular season.

The same web site mentioned above is paying out EUR 81 for every EUR 1 if the Essendon Bombers come out victorious, which goes to show that the experts believe that it would be nearly impossible for this team to win the premiership.

What's amazing about betting on the Australian Football League regular season is that there are a variety of betting options available. As can be seen above, gamers can bet on a specific winner. However, those who are a bit more risk averse may choose a different betting option. Several brokers offer the opportunity to bet on who will place in the top eight, or top 50%, of the league. Similar to betting on a winner, odds are provided for each team to place in the top eight. As one would guess, the payouts are much lower since the chance of placing in the top eight is much more likely than winning the whole premiership.

Those looking to make the most out of their betting experience should be aware of all of their options. In the examples mentioned above, a future betting is being applied, since the payout is based on the result of the whole season. Gamblers looking for a more dynamic offering should consider proposition betting, which allows for one to place a wager on a specific statistic. For instance, one can bet that the Western Bulldogs will score at least a certain number of points in a game. By considering all of the betting options, one can make an informed prediction regarding the outcome of the Australian Football League premiership.

Another popular way to bet on Australian Football games is to choose the winner based on a statistical point margin. As always odds are given, though in this case they generally reflect the expected winner as well as the point spread. If the anticipated spread is 10 points and a team only wins by 7 points a bet for the losing team would actually be considered a win.

Obviously these are not the only ways to bet on football games. There are some more games available through numerous bookies. In general the games are going to be very similar to these however. Make sure to do your research before choosing a specific game or bookmaker.

Job Interviews and the Entrepreneurial Job Search | Website Traffic ...

By Julie Austin

Everyone would like to not only have a job they enjoy, but also a financially rewarding one as well. Unfortunately, the job market is overcrowded right now. So how can you stand out from the crowd and get interviews with the best companies?

The best way to do this is through a technique and job seeking philosophy called ?Entrepreneurial Job Search?. Here is the basic concept. You as a person, are not merely an employee, but a business. Your education is an investment in the company of you. Your job history is your company?s success and growth statistics. In short, you are your own greatest asset and you have a lot to give any business that needs your services.

At first this might sound like the babblings of a second rate self-help guru, but it isn?t. Studies show that hiring managers very much appreciate and are more likely to hire candidates who clearly take pride in themselves and their work. If you hold to the philosophy that your career must be run like a business and that you personally are a money-making company, then your attitude will be different.

The first step to implementing this philosophy into your own job search is to take a realistic stock of your company?s assets. What is your education? Experience? Background? Specialized training? Research and find out exactly what the medium range of payment for the services you can provide is.

Second, be assertive when applying for jobs. Don?t just look online, find a job opening, slap a resume on and email and hope for the best. Call the hiring manager of the company, explain that you are interested in the position you?ve seen listed, and point blank ask for an interview. This may seem a little forward, but let them know you are applying for an interview, not just for their computer to send your resume into the land of forgotten applications. After you?ve submitted your application, follow it up with an email stating that you sent your application and are very much looking forward to talking to the hiring manager.

Is this aggressive? Yes. But it is also how businesses do business with each other. In the entrepreneurial job search philosophy, you are a company looking to merge with another company to the mutual benefit of both.

The entrepreneurial job search concept can be harder for those of us with shyer and more polite temperaments. But keep in mind that you want to communicate that you are energetic, capable, and on top of your game. You don?t need to be demanding or arrogant, and you should go out of your way to be cooperative, but you also need to show spunk and determination.

This is your career we are talking about. It is perfectly okay to carry yourself with energy and pride when seeking a new position. Show the hiring manager the right combination of qualification, reasonable financial expectation, and enthusiasm, and you are almost certain to get the interview, and the job!

Julie Austin doesn?t just teach entrepreneurism, she?s lived it from the ground up. She?s dedicated to helping others become employed for life by using the techniques entrepreneurs have known about for years. http://funjobfairs.com

Lilly 4Q profit falls 27 pct, hurt by patent loss

(AP) ? Eli Lilly and Co.'s net income tumbled 27 percent in the last quarter of 2011 as the drugmaker faced another revenue-sapping patent expiration for a key product.

The Indianapolis company lost U.S. patent protection in October for its all-time best-selling drug, the antipsychotic Zyprexa, which generated 19 percent of its third-quarter revenue. Zyprexa sales fell 44 percent in the fourth quarter to $749.6 million.

Lilly also was hurt by a 62 percent drop in revenue from the cancer treatment Gemzar, which lost patent protection in 2010. But sales for its antidepressant Cymbalta and top-selling insulin Humalog made up for some of these losses, and the drugmaker's results beat Wall Street expectations.

Lilly shares climbed nearly 3 percent, or $1.15, to $40.40 in premarket trading Tuesday, after the company released results.

Lilly earned $858.2 million, or 77 cents per share, in the three months that ended Dec. 31. That's down from $1.17 billion, or $1.05 per share, in the final quarter of 2010.

Revenue fell 2 percent to $6.05 billion.

Adjusted earnings, which exclude some one-time charges, were 87 cents per share.

Analyst surveyed by FactSet expected, on average, adjusted earnings of 81 cents per share on $5.89 billion in revenue.

The drugmaker is entering a stretch where it faces patent expirations that will expose several drugs to cheaper generic competition. It loses patent protection for Cymbalta and Humalog next year. Sales for those drugs climbed 20 percent to $1.18 billion and 21 percent to $662 million, respectively, in the fourth quarter.

Lilly still has patent protection for Zyprexa in Japan, but it expects revenue from the drug to plunge by more than $3 billion this year.

The company has spent years preparing for these patent losses. It has cut more than $1 billion in costs since 2009 and trimmed its workforce.

It will depend on its pipeline of drugs under development, its animal health business, and sales in Japan and emerging markets like China to get through the expected revenue slump caused by the patent expirations.

Lilly has a dozen potential drugs in late-stage clinical testing, the last phase before a company seeks regulatory approval. That includes potential treatments for Alzheimer's disease, cancer and the immune system disorders lupus and psoriasis.

Some analysts doubt Lilly's ability to recover from the patent expirations without the aid of a major acquisition, and they wonder about the future of Lilly's dividend, which currently stands at a quarterly rate of 49 cents per share. Company officials have said repeatedly they expect to at least maintain their dividend and they plan no major deals.

For the full year, Lilly earned $4.35 billion, or $3.90 per share, on $24.29 billion in revenue, as seven drugs topped $1 billion in sales. Adjusted earnings for 2011 were $4.41 per share.

Lilly said earlier this month it expects to earn between $3.10 and $3.20 in 2012, which would represent a drop of between 27 percent and 30 percent. Analysts expect earnings of $3.21 per share.

Lilly has said it should record annual earnings of at least $3 billion on revenue of at least $20 billion through 2014.
