Teeny Fly Likely Cuts Off Tiny Heads

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

A newly discovered phorid fly is less than half-a-millimeter long and, if its like its relatives, parasitizes and decapitates tiny ants. Sophie Bushwick reports.

More 60-Second Science

Fruit flies are pretty small. But they laugh at a species of fly recently discovered in Thailand. Dubbed Euryplatea nanaknihali, this member of the phorid fly family is less than half a millimeter long?a fifth the size of a fruit fly.

But before you ooh and aah over the ?cute widdle bug,? bear in mind that it probably makes its living cutting off the heads of tiny ants. The fly is described in the Annals of the Entomological Society of America. [Brian V. Brown, Small Size No Protection for Acrobat Ants: World's Smallest Fly Is a Parasitic Phorid (Diptera: Phoridae)]

Many phorid species lay their eggs in living ants. The newly hatched larvae move to the ants? heads, feed on them and eventually decapitate them.

But some ants were considered immune to the parasitic threat because they were too small for any known fly species to fit into their heads. With the discovery of the littlest phorid fly, however, that size advantage?or rather, lack-of-size advantage?vanishes.?

It?s not definite yet, but the new little fly probably is an ant eater: its pointy abdomen is well adapted to pierce an ant?s body for egg-laying purposes. How adorable is that?

Nude Man In Venice Beach Screams, Humps The Air (GRAPHIC VIDEO)

Venice, Calif. is known to attract a topless contingent of beach-goers every now and then, but one man went the full monty Sunday night -- and it was all caught on video.

Youtube user gnomicmedia called the clip, "Bath Salts are BAD for you!!!" and added this description:

This happened earlier tonight in front of my house; who knows what the guy is really on, people thought maybe meth. Regardless, this drugged out crazy naked dude wants to give you a hug! Neighbor Nick tries to help the guy...welcome to Venice Beach!!! 07/01/12

Oh, and he got arrested in front of the Venice Ale House.

Despite the video's claim that Mr. Full Monty was arrested that evening, LAPD officer Karen Rayner told The Huffington Post that she couldn't come up with any information about a possible detention or arrest in the area that night.

And despite the video title, it's unclear which drugs, if any, the man had consumed.

WARNING: NSFW video has graphic nudity and adult language.

Buck naked Venice Beach dude is the fourth man this summer to make the news for acting crazy while wasted. Another nude man terrorized a Hollywood Hills neighborhood June 12, crawling on top of parked cars and screaming about being high on drugs.

A few days later, a man led police on a high-speed chase, injuring five people before he was pulled over. When police asked him if he was under the influence of any drugs, he responded innocently, "What is drugs?"

Finally, in the most serious case, a man claiming to be high on bath salts bludgeoned an elderly woman with a shovel and barricaded himself in an apartment June 21. He said he was an alien who could talk to Jesus.

h/t Yo! Venice! and LA Weekly.

Manchester United files for IPO in US

NEW YORK (AP) ? Manchester United plans to go public. In the United States, to boot.

The record 19-time English champions filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday to hold an initial public offering of stock and become a listed company on the New York Stock Exchange. The deal could ease pressure on the club's cash flow as it tries to keep and acquire players in an attempt to regain English and European titles.

While the stock price and the number of shares were not listed, the registration statement said the club hoped to raise a maximum of $100 million ? a place-holding figure that could change before the offering becomes effective.

"We intend to use all of our net proceeds from this offering to reduce our indebtedness," the team's filing said.

The Glazer family, which bought the club in 2005, would retain control through Class B shares, which would have 10 times the voting power of the stock that would be sold to the public.

Under the reorganization, the team would become a wholly owned subsidiary of Manchester United Ltd., a newly formed holding company based in the Cayman Islands.

The team was listed on the London Stock Exchange from 1991 until June 2005, when Glazers completed a leveraged buyout valued at $1.47 billion. The Glazers also own the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

United has been looking to raise funds to help reduce debt from the 2005 takeover that was 423 million pounds ($663 million) as of March 31, much of it with interest rates of 8 3/8 and 8 3/4 percent. A $1 billion offering on the Singapore stock market was pursued last year, but the plans were halted due to volatile global markets.

The team, European champions in 1968, 1999 and 2008, has been valued at $2.24 billion by Forbes magazine, ranking it as soccer's most valuable club for the eighth year in a row.

The Red Devils were on track to their 20th league title this year, taking an eight-point lead in the final weeks of the season. But crosstown rival Manchester City, which became soccer's biggest spender following its purchase by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates, won the title on goal difference on the final day of the season.

"In the Premier League, recent investment from wealthy team owners has led to teams with deep financial backing that are able to acquire top players and coaching staff, which could result in improved performance from those teams in domestic and European competitions," the filing said.

Manchester United said that it had a loss from continuing operations of $47.5 million in the year ending June 30, 2010, then had a profit of $13 million in the following year. It said it had an unaudited profit of $38.2 million in the nine months ending March 31.

A nearly 300-page prospectus to the SEC contains a series of warnings about the state of the club's finances.

The filing says "our indebtedness could adversely affect our financial health and competitive position" and reduce "the availability of our cash flow to fund the hiring and retention of players and coaching staff."

United also warned that new UEFA spending restrictions "could negatively affect our business."

European soccer's governing body is phasing in spending restrictions over several seasons, known as Financial Fair Play. Under the rules, clubs have to break even from soccer operations, or they risk being excluded from European competitions starting with the 2014-15 season.

But United is by far English soccer's biggest moneymaker, helping to soften the impact of its debt.

The filing revealed the club received 25.6 million pounds from Nike in 2010-11 under its 303 million pound, 13-year deal with the equipment supplier, which has three years remaining, and another 5.7 million pounds as its split of the profits.

Its shirt sponsorship with the insurance company AON, which runs through the 2013-14 season, and a separate agreement with the company that runs through June 2015 guarantees 88 million pounds, up from a 14 million pound-a-year deal with AIG that ran for three years through the 2009-10 season.

New media and mobile revenue alone was 17.2 million pounds in 2011.

Managers of the offering are Jefferies & Co. Inc., Credit Suisse Securities (USA) LLC, J.P. Morgan Securities LLC, BofA Merrill Lynch and Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. United does not intend to pay dividends to shareholders.

Several other Premier League teams have U.S. owners, including Arsenal (controlled by Stan Kroenke), Liverpool (by the parent company of the Boston Red Sox), Aston Villa (Randy Lerner) and Sunderland (Ellis Short).

Tevatron scientists announce their final results on the Higgs particle

ScienceDaily (July 2, 2012) ? After more than 10 years of gathering and analyzing data produced by the U.S. Department of Energy's Tevatron collider, scientists from the CDF and DZero collaborations have found their strongest indication to date for the long-sought Higgs particle. Squeezing the last bit of information out of 500 trillion collisions produced by the Tevatron for each experiment since March 2001, the final analysis of the data does not settle the question of whether the Higgs particle exists, but gets closer to an answer.

The Tevatron scientists unveiled their latest results on July 2, two days before the highly anticipated announcement of the latest Higgs-search results from the Large Hadron Collider in Europe.

"The Tevatron experiments accomplished the goals that we had set with this data sample," said Fermilab's Rob Roser, cospokesperson for the CDF experiment at DOE's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. "Our data strongly point toward the existence of the Higgs boson, but it will take results from the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider in Europe to establish a discovery."

Scientists of the CDF and DZero collider experiments at the Tevatron received a round of rousing applause from hundreds of colleagues when they presented their results at a scientific seminar at Fermilab. The Large Hadron Collider results will be announced at a scientific seminar at 2 a.m. CDT on July 4 at the CERN particle physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland.

"It is a real cliffhanger," said DZero co-spokesperson Gregorio Bernardi, physicist at the Laboratory of Nuclear and High Energy Physics, or LPNHE, at the University of Paris VI & VII. "We know exactly what signal we are looking for in our data, and we see strong indications of the production and decay of Higgs bosons in a crucial decay mode with a pair of bottom quarks, which is difficult to observe at the LHC. We are very excited about it."

The Higgs particle is named after Scottish physicist Peter Higgs, who among other physicists in the 1960s helped develop the theoretical model that explains why some particles have mass and others don't, a major step toward understanding the origin of mass. The model predicts the existence of a new particle, which has eluded experimental detection ever since. Only high-energy particle colliders such as the Tevatron, which was shut down in September 2011, and the Large Hadron Collider, which produced its first collisions in November 2009, have the chance to produce the Higgs particle. About 1,700 scientists from U.S. institutions, including Fermilab, are working on the LHC experiments.

The Tevatron results indicate that the Higgs particle, if it exists, has a mass between 115 and 135 GeV/c2, or about 130 times the mass of the proton.

"During its life, the Tevatron must have produced thousands of Higgs particles, if they actually exist, and it's up to us to try to find them in the data we have collected," said Luciano Ristori, co-spokesperson of the CDF experiment and physicist at Fermilab and the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) . "We have developed sophisticated simulation and analysis programs to identify Higgs-like patterns. Still, it is easier to look for a friend's face in a sports stadium filled with 100,000 people than to search for a Higgs-like event among trillions of collisions."

The final Tevatron results corroborate the Higgs search results that scientists from the Tevatron and the LHC presented at physics conferences in March 2012.

The search for the Higgs particle at the Tevatron focuses on a different decay mode than the search at the LHC. According to the theoretical framework known as the Standard Model of Particles, Higgs bosons can decay in many different ways. Just as a vending machine might return the same amount of change using different combinations of coins, the Higgs can decay into different combinations of particles. At the LHC, the experiments can most easily observe the existence of a Higgs particle by searching for its decay into two energetic photons. At the Tevatron, experiments most easily see the decay of a Higgs particle into a pair of bottom quarks.

Tevatron scientists found that the observed Higgs signal in the combined CDF and DZero data in the bottom-quark decay mode has a statistical significance of 2.9 sigma. This means there is only a 1-in-550 chance that the signal is due to a statistical fluctuation.

"We achieved a critical step in the search for the Higgs boson," said Dmitri Denisov, DZero cospokesperson and physicist at Fermilab. "While 5-sigma significance is required for a discovery, it seems unlikely that the Tevatron collisions mimicked a Higgs signal. Nobody expected the Tevatron to get this far when it was built in the 1980s."

The Tevatron is one of eight particle accelerators and storage rings on the Fermilab site. The largest, operational accelerator at Fermilab now is the 2-mile-circumference Main Injector, which provides particles for the laboratory's neutrino and muon research programs.

The CDF and DZero collaborations submitted their joint Higgs search results to the electronic preprint archive arXiv.org. The paper also is available at: http://tevnphwg.fnal.gov/results/SM_Higgs_Summer_12/

Severe Weather Forces Wounded Warriors to Suspend Climb Up Mt. McKinley as Part of Disabled Sport USA's Warfighter Sports Program

After reaching 15,500 feet, 50+ MPH gusts, severe snowstorms and avalanches force five wounded warriors, including two double-leg amputees to end effort to tackle 20,320-foot climb to raise awareness, inspire others with disabilities and support Disabled Sports USA

Rockville, MD (PRWEB) July 03, 2012

Disabled Sports USA announces that Team Warfighter Sports has concluded its 21 day climb of Denali (Mt. McKinley) in Alaska, the highest mountain in North America due to severe weather.

The team included five climbers, with only four ?good legs? between them, from three wars and two generations: Retired Army Sgt. Neil Duncan, 29, a double-leg amputee injured in Afghanistan; Marine Capt. David Borden, 31, who, after losing his leg above the knee to a suicide bomb in Iraq in 2008, returned to combat in Afghanistan in 2011; retired Army Cpl. Steve Martin, 42, a double-leg amputee injured in Afghanistan; retired Army Capt. Jesse Acosta, 34, who suffered permanent damage to hip, leg and back in Iraq; and retired Army Sgt. Kirk Bauer, JD, 64, an above-knee amputee injured in Vietnam and the Executive Director of Disabled Sports USA for the past 29 years.

Despite reaching 14,200 feet and camping for nine days waiting for the weather to improve, the team was unable to proceed. Eighteen days into the climb, on June 28, one final attempt was made to continue to ascend, but at 15,500 feet, a severe snowstorm forced the team back to 14,200 feet.

?This season has proven to be very challenging for the Denali expedition teams,? said Dave Weber, Denali Mountaineer Ranger. ?We have seen expedition teams turn around at camp 1, 2, and 3 but the fact that Team Warfighter Sports made it to camp 4 at 11,200 feet speaks to their resilience and fortitude; they were a model expedition team. Having this group of wounded warriors on the mountain was truly inspirational to the rangers and the other expedition teams.?

?The team gave it a strong effort, working hard for weeks as they made their way up the slopes of Denali, but ultimately, weather conditions just didn?t cooperate. The loose snow made footing especially difficult and increased the risk of avalanches. With more time and better weather, I am confident Team Warfighter Sports would have reached the summit,? stated Drew Ludwig, the expedition?s lead guide from Mountain Trip.

?I am very proud of what Team Warfighter Sports? accomplished. Although we didn?t reach the summit, if the weather had cooperated, we would have prevailed. Every wounded warrior and person with disability faces setbacks, often out of their control, and each one must make a choice to either let setbacks defeat them or drive them forward. This experience will drive us forward and we hope our decision to climb will inspire other wounded and disabled to do so as well,? said Bauer. ?The 21 day Warfighter Sports Denali Challenge was the most incredible experience I have had. We could not have done it without the outstanding guides from Mountain Trip, sponsors and supporters nationwide that believe in our capabilities.?

Even though the team did not reach the summit of Mt. McKinley, team members gave it their all and were grateful for the tremendous guides from Mountain Trip and the support they received from their family and friends, general public and the climb?s sponsors, including: Chartis, Tee it up for the Troops, Team Semper Fi, American Airlines, Empire BlueCross BlueShield, and Leonidas International, a foundation started by climber Acosta. The team provided constant progress updates to their supporters through a satellite phone generously supplied by Iridium.

?It was the experience of a lifetime and I plan to return to conquer that mountain? Martin said.

?The guide team was fantastic and a critical element to this climb. We were prepared, had the right equipment, trained hard, planned well and were steam-rolled by something uncontrollable and unpredictable - the weather,? Duncan said.

?The entire climb challenged us physically, mentally and spiritually. Each of us gave the mountain all we had. We are disappointed we did not reach the summit due to severe weather, but very pound of our accomplishment none the less. It was an adventure of a lifetime. I am looking forward to going back and reaching the summit,? Borden said. ?Personally, I would like to thank Warfighter Sports and Team Semper Fi for making this experience possible.?

"When I reflect on our Warfighter Sports Denali Challenge, I truly believe that those emotionally or physically wounded veterans who witnessed our efforts on the mountain would likely be that much more compelled to attempt an activity they might otherwise have thought impossible. So, regardless of how high we ultimately climbed, we would have achieved our objective in reaching out to and influencing this population. Ironically, I would be remiss not to say there's a growing desire to return to the mountain and finish what we started,? Acosta said.

The Denali climb benefits Warfighter Sports, a program of Disabled Sports USA, which offers free sports rehabilitation for severely wounded warriors in military hospitals and communities across the U.S. Over 5,600 wounded warriors and families have been served since the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq began. Warfighter Sports rebuilds lives through sports by improving self-confidence, promoting independence and uniting families through shared healthy activities.
